NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- For the second time this week, federal authorities have arrested a foreign sailor who got past security at Louis Armstrong International airport with knives in his carryon luggage.
Mariano Verdadero Condat, 40, of the Philippines was arrested Thursday after a random search at a boarding gate turned up seven knives and a six-inch hacksaw blade in his satchel, U.S. Attorney Jim Letten said Friday.
Letten said Condat was returning to the Philippines after a month at sea. He would not give details about Condat's arrest.
On Sunday, a random gate search turned up five knives and two sets of scissors in the briefcase of Albert Silvarian, a 42-year-old Indian. A second search after he boarded the flight found three more knives. He was taken off the plane and remained in custody Friday.
