The ANC Rental Corporation, which filed for bankruptcy protection in November, has begun to combine the operations of its National and Alamo rental car brands at major airports, but not without a fight. The move has set in motion a legal battle with ANC's biggest competitors.

Hertz, a unit of Ford Motor, and Avis Rent a Car System, which is owned by Cendant, say ANC is using bankruptcy as a cover to evade airport contracts governing rental car companies. They have begun filing suit in courts across the country to block ANC, and are appealing to airport officials to stop the action.

ANC contends the effort, which began last month, is a crucial step in its bid to become solvent and is permitted under federal bankruptcy laws that give debtors the right to streamline their businesses.
