LONDON (AP)--More than 200 security staff at the U.K.'s Manchester Airport began a 36-hour strike Friday to protest proposed wage reductions and job cuts they say will compromise airport safety.

The walkout followed talks earlier in the week between airport executives and the Transport and General Workers' Union which ended in a deadlock. It also marked a step up in action by the workers after a series of one- and two-hour strikes earlier this month.

A spokeswoman for Manchester Airport said it would be business as usual during the strike and no serious delays were expected.
