FAA vigilant on safety

By Nicholas Sabatini

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the inspector general (IG) share a goal of improving aviation safety. Even before the inspector general's recent report on the Continuing Analysis and Surveillance Systems (CASS), the FAA had initiated its own review that resulted in a plan to address some of the same concerns later identified by the IG.

As the IG's office wrote to the FAA shortly before the report was released: "We are mindful that all official findings pertaining to aircraft-airworthiness issues now have the potential to be construed in a manner that increases public concerns. We do not believe the facts and the recommendations contained in this report are cause for heightened concerns among the traveling public."

After FAA inspectors found significant problems with the CASS program at Alaska Airlines in February 2000, the FAA immediately launched a review of all of the nation's major airlines to make sure there were no similar problems elsewhere. All of those carriers had programs that met FAA standards, but some programs had room for improvement. The FAA approved action plans for each airline to make those improvements, and the airlines have carried out all of the action plans.
