U.N. sanctions grounded its international flights, the Taliban plundered its cash and made off with its spare parts and the United States Air Force destroyed six of its eight aging aircraft. And despite all that, Afghanistan’s national airline Ariana is raring to fly again.

Earlier today, Ariana Afghan Airlines’ first commercial flight since Sept. 14 took off from Kabul airport and flew successfully to Herat.
