Lufthansa Near Order With Airbus
Lufthansa is close to concluding a multibillion-dollar order for the new Airbus A380 superjumbo jetliner, despite the industry downturn after Sept. 11, Jürgen Weber, the German airline's chief executive, said yesterday.
"We will come to a final agreement very soon," Mr. Weber said in an interview in Manhattan, referring to Airbus Industrie. Asked about the timing, Mr. Weber smiled and said there could be a "surprise" for Christmas.
Lufthansa wants to order 15 of the 550-seat aircraft for delivery starting in 2007, worth $3.6 billion at list prices, though Lufthansa would surely get a deep discount.
One person close to the negotiations said that the order was awaiting the approval of Lufthansa's supervisory board, which is expected to meet next month.
