A major accident involving two tractor-trailers and a tanker truck hauling gasoline crippled Route 80 in Denville early Friday and damaged the superhighway so badly that traffic could be snarled for months.

The westbound lanes between Exits 42C and 38 will remain closed until at least midday Monday as engineers inspect a bridge severely weakened by the barrage of explosions and searing heat. The closure will wreak havoc on hundreds of thousands of commuters and North Jerseyans heading to vacations.

For anyone travelling westbound on I80, I would suggest deferring any detour onto 46 west as long as possible. On Monday afternoon, I was tempted to exit onto route 46 about four miles east of the junction with 287. The traffic was backed up well onto 80 so I opted to exit four miles later near Parsippany. Traffic was a breeze. Its now about 9:35PM in NJ and 46 west is still barely moving.

I'm returning to New Jersey tonight. Is I-80 westbound reopened?
