A Chicago-bound American Airlines jet carrying 56 passengers had to take off before reaching lift-off speed to avoid a small cargo plane that had strayed onto the jet's runway, the Federal Aviation Administration said Monday.
The Fokker F-100 twin engine jet was accelerating for takeoff at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport Saturday night when the incident occurred.
John Clabes, spokesman for the FAA's Southwest Region, said the pilot of the cargo plane became disoriented and mistakenly taxied onto the end of the runway in front of the American jet.
American Airlines Flight 2394 was en route to Chicago's Midway Airport when the pilot noticed the smaller aircraft on the runway, forcing the American flight to pull up to avoid striking the aircraft, said American Airlines spokesman John Hotard.
