During the period of early January through mid February of this year, several Internet aviation journalists banded together when it was discovered TWA retirees were about to lose their travel benefits in an American Airlines buy-out of TWA. When this news was made public, I received over 40,000 emails from passengers, TWA employees and retirees, as well as other aviation personnel protesting this action by American. It is our belief as Internet aviation journalists that this public outcry had a positive effect on the situation. During hearings before the House Aviation Subcommittee, Donald Carty, CEO of American Airlines stated that American Airlines intended to honor the TWA retirees' travel benefits. Now (after the buy-out has been completed), TWA retirees are back in the news again over the same issue...
