Newsstand - Amtrak Derails, 1 Dies, 90 Injured
An Amtrak train derailed about 70 miles southwest of Des Moines on Sunday, killing one passenger and injuring at least 90 people, said company spokeswoman Debra Hare.
The California Zephyr's two locomotives and 15 cars derailed in a remote area. A lack of road access hampered the rescue effort, said Corning Police Chief Larry Drew, near Nodaway.

Oops! I'm going to take California Zephyr on early April...
Should I wish the service be back, or wish not?
Investigators combing a shredded, 3,000-foot track lined with twisted rail cars planned to analyze track samples to see if the broken rails may have caused an Amtrak crash that killed a Colorado woman and injured 96 other people.

I've got to tell you, these derailments are NOT rare at all. Invariably, there are several passenger train derailments in the US each year. However, usually there are only injuries.
I don't think travel in early April should be a problem. But, call Amtrak to confirm. Usually they have the route functional again within a few days.
The Amtrak derailment that killed one person and injured 96 others was likely caused by track failure and not human error, a federal investigator said.
"It is clear there was a fracture in this track,''

I called Amtrak. The rep I talked with told me she has no idea if it operates on early April or not. I'll call again later.
