New hygiene checks are to be introduced on airline meals and cruise ship catering in an attempt to halt an increase in food poisoning, according to UK newspaper The Guardian.

A legal loophole means that standards of food preparation and service on air and sea transport are not subject to the same checks as land-based eating places, the report said.

I am involved in the discussions with the Food Standards Agency (FSA)who wish to see increased powers under the Food Safety act 1990. A meeting is to be held on the 28th of this month to discuss the views of interested parties before proceeding further with legislation. Port health inspectors can board and impound any vessel at the present time. I can advise you that the primary area of concern is visiting cruise ship's where there have been instances of passengers complaing of hygenie standards and the UK authorities powerless to implement certain standards. Airline catering standards are pretty well amongst the highest throughout the world due to the nature of airline operations. Who ate the fish???
