Blood clot fells Qantas attendant
Australian airline pilots and flight attendants want urgent talks with the major airlines after a Qantas flight attendant collapsed suffering a potentially fatal blood clot following a 15-hour flight from Sydney to Los Angeles this week.
The case is believed to the first case of aviation-linked deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) suffered by a member of a Qantas air crew.
The development came as researchers at St Vincent's Hospital reported that sleeping pills commonly taken on international flights could be contributing to the surge in reported cases of DVT in some high-risk passengers.
The international division secretary for the Flight Attendants Association of Australia, Ms Johanna Brem, confirmed yesterday that a male Qantas flight attendant was admitted to hospital early this week with a pulmonary embolus following a Sydney-to-Los Angeles flight.
