The German charter airline, LTU International Airways, said that it decided to place orders for up to 25 new Airbus aircraft. LTU said it had initially signed a contract to purchase 6 A320-class aircraft as a first step to transforming its entire fleet into an Airbus fleet by 2003. The 6 were the first of a total 18 A320-class aircraft - A320s with 174 seats and A321s with 212 seats - that it intended to buy.
Also, it planned to buy 7 new A330-200 long-haul planes. Financial details were not disclosed.
LTU, a leading European charter airlines is 49.9% owned by Swiss SAirGroup. It,s in financial difficulty and SAir plans to inject some 72 million euros to turn it around.
These A320's would be used to serve destinations such as the Canary Isles, the Mediterranean and the Middle East from German airports. Long-haul aircraft would be used for intercontinental routes from Germany to North America, Caribbean, Africa & Asia. By "harmonizing" its fleet, LTU hopes to reduce costs.
