American, Cathay Pacific Sign Codeshare and Urge U.S. and Hong Kong To Negotiate New Aviation Agreement
FORT WORTH, Texas, Jan. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- American Airlines and Cathay Pacific Airways have concluded a comprehensive codeshare agreement, which they anticipate implementing this summer, pending governmental approval of the codeshare partnership.
The codeshare agreement involves American placing its "AA" designator code on Cathay Pacific's flights between the United States and Hong Kong, as well as on Cathay's intra-Asian services to and from Hong
Kong. Cathay would place its "CX" code on American's U.S. domestic services beyond Cathay's U.S. gateway cities, as well as flights between the United States and certain Latin American destinations.
The current U.S.-Hong Kong air transport agreement does not specifically authorize codesharing between U.S. and Hong Kong carriers. The two governments recently held informal discussions regarding potential
revisions to the agreement, and formal negotiations are scheduled to take place in Hong Kong this coming April.
"We have had a very successful frequent flyer program relationship with Cathay Pacific for over 10 years, and that partnership has been enhanced further by both carriers' participation in the oneworld alliance. We
are hopeful that negotiators will conclude liberalized air transport arrangements between our two governments so that our customers can benefit from expanded air travel opportunities," said Don Carty,
American's Chairman and CEO.
