AP and Reuters both are reporting a Swiss-registered charter aircraft carrying 41 people crashed into the sea off Libya Thursday, Swiss officials said.

The Swiss Air Accident Investigating Bureau said there was no immediate word on casualties but there were some reports of fatalities.

The plane, which belongs to the Avisto AG charter company, went down at 2:30 p.m. It was not immediately clear exactly where the crash occurred.

The Shorts SD360-300 made an emergency landing in the water during its approach.

Avisto had leased the plane to Sirte Oil Co in Libya to transport workers between its headquarters and various oil fields, Avisto said in a statement.

``There were 38 passengers of various nationalities as well as two pilots and one flight attendant on board,'' it said.

``The accident happened around 1135 GMT (6:35 a.m. EST) during a flight from Tripoli to Marsa el Brega. According to our information, the plane made an emergency landing in the water for unknown reasons shortly before landing in Marsa el Brega,'' it said.

It said it had no more details or any word on casualties. Marsa el Brega is Libya's main center for producing petrochemicals and is operated by the National Petrochemicals Company (NAPECTCO).
