Brent, sorry to hear about your situation. YGE (you got email).
In these situations, the best idea is to
a) have official documentation in some form of the reason for your travel.
b) be commencing travel within 72 hours.
If you contact Reservations they will do all they can for you.

Hi Brent,
I'm sorry to hear about your father. I know how distressing it can be as I went through a similar situation earlier this year.
You may also want to check out compassionate fares with Qantas. My brother and I flew to NZ for 50% discount. We had to have the hospital fax a letter to Qantas in MEL stating our father's condition. The whole transaction was completed within three hours and we were on the next flight out of SYD.
If there is anything I can do, especially since we are both in SYD, please e-mail me privately.

Thanks you all for your kind words and advice- especially Air_NZ_Boy for your assistance.
What makes this whole thing eve worse is that all my brothers live in the US and I am left to deal with it all. I just hope my Father doesn't have one of those long drawn out, painful deaths.
Thanks one again.

An update on this one........
My Mother phoned me fron NZ last month and told me my Dad only had afew days to live. I had already booked a fare for later in the month. Rang NZ and they told me to get a letter from my Dad's Doctor and fax it up to them. Once I had done that, they would ring me back and book me on the follwing mornings flight to WLG. They rang me back within 20 mins to say they had received a fax from the Doctor and I was booked for the next day. in addition, i could make change on the return sector.
I got to see my Dad for a week before he slipped peacefully away.
Well done NZ!!!!!!!!
