In March 2000 I got an letter/offer to open an E*TRADE account for "up to 50,000 Delta
SkyMiles".
I opened an account and entered the Special Offer Code GZU. I never received the
(5,000) SkyMiles (for my initial investment).
THIS IS WHAT E*TRADE ANSWERED:
Thank you for choosing E*TRADE.
Upon further review of your account, it does not appear that you
qualify for the Delta promotional offer. Unfortunately your
account was not coded correctly to receive such a promotion. We
value your business and apologize for any inconvenience.
For further assistance, please contact us at 1-800-786-2575 or go
to http://www.etrade.com and visit our Learning Center. You can
access the learning center by clicking on the "help" button
located on the E*TRADE banner at the top of each page. The
Learning Center provides detailed instructions, definitions, and
services to assist you in navigating your E*TRADE account.
Sincerely,
Matthew Kramer

That is ridiculous! "Unfortunately your account was not coded correctly?" Who unfortunately did not code it correctly?!
I would defintely pursue this further. All the way to the top of E-Trade if I had to. If they truly valued your business they would have given you the miles by now. It cost them more to investigate it then it would for them to even have purchased the miles for crying out loud!

E-Trade is clueless. I did a similar promotion through Clickrewards and it took weeks to get the miles, even with the help of the Clickrewards customer service reps and only because I kept meticulous documentation of the signup process for proof. Have you contacted Delta Skymiles about the problem to see if they can help?

It took me months and many, many phone calls to E*Trade to get the bonus for myself, my wife, and two daughters. In the end, they posted an extra 5000 in error. After all the work, needless to say, I didn't complain.
I too opened an account last year with the promises of bonus miles from E*TRADE, only to discover that the initial opening balance had to be maintained for at least six months.
While this was not necessarily a problem, as the initial deposit was minimal, the offer I replied to did not list the "fine print" and I made a number of buys and withdrawals from the account within the first two months, so I was, unfortunately, out of luck on this offer.

As I've posted before - E*Trade are incompetent to say the least. I had nightmares with them. I'm waiting for a better offer and then I'm jumping ship.
Their Customer Service is poor - although I did get my UA miles after about 6 months of badgering them.
I received my 5000 bonus miles within 1.5 weeks of opening my account. After reading this thread, I feel lucky.
My wife and I each opened E*Trade account last year for United promotion. My wife got the miles right away and I got mine after a couple of emails.

It took me months and months AND help from the UA 1K MP desk to get my acct credited, and Etrade "admitted" that I would have never gotten it due to "improper coding", which was not my fault.

I opened an etrade account for 25,000 United miles. Luckily, I printed the offer stating the terms, as they changed the terms after I opened the account. I finally got the 25,000 miles but only after several emails.
Raffy: The requirement to keep the opening deposit with them for six months is what changed.

I applied for the account on the Internet, I coded it right, and I have a proof/printout.
In other words: my 'docs' are good - they have to credit me the miles.
I'll inform this board if and when I receive the Delta SkyMiles.
I am somewhat reluctant to cancel this account - E*trade works very well with my Quicken software; online update etc. I like it, it's the future.
I just did not like the 'language' of their answer.

TO RAFFY AND OTHERS. I ALSO OPENED AN ACCOUNT IN THE FALL OF 1999 TO GET 25,000 UAL MILES. EVERYTIME I EMAIL THEM I GET SOMEONE DIFFERENT. THEY SAID I DIDN'T QUALIFY BECAUSE I DIDN'T KEEP THE $50,000 BALANCE IN THE ACCOUNT (HARD TO DO IN THIS MARKET). THEY FINALLY GAVE ME 5,000 MILES AND I WILL STAY AFTER THEM UNTIL I GET THE REST. THE PROMOTIONAL MATERIAL LAST YEAR DOES NOT SAY ANYTHING ABOUT A $50,000 MINIMUM BALANCE, AND THEY KNOW IT. I TOLD THEM I WILL FILE IN SMALL CLAIMS COURT IF NECESSARY.
