On my routing TXL (LH -C) - FRA (LH -F) - LAX (NZ -F) - AKL (NZ -C) - BNE (DJ -Y) - CNS I have 8 hours layover in LAX.
Can somebody of the experts suggest what to do while I stay in LAX?

I have a couple of suggestions
#1 The Getty Museum - free entry ,about $4 return for the bus fare.Take Airport Lot C Shuttle East to the LAX TRANSIT CENTER and wait at Dock 14 .Take Bus 561 West (LTD-SAN FER SYLMAR STA.) Get off at SEPULVEDA and GETTY CENTER.The driver announced the stop. Its about an hour all told and the bus leaves only every hour or so .The Getty Museum is simply magnificent both for its architecture and displays .The views are just unbelievable .There are many restaurants to choose from and plenty of activities.Be careful as there are other buses stopping at the museum stop on the return journey that do not return to LAX.The information desk ladies on the arrival levels have the latest timetables and info.
#2 Rancho La Brea Tar Pits on 5806 Wiltshire Blvd in the heart of Los Angeles. This is one of the world’s most famous fossil localities, having the largest and most diverse assembly of extinct Ice Age plants and animals in the world.
I just caught one of the airport shuttles and was dropped off in front .I rang later and did the same in reverse ($16 each way)
#3 Just next door to #2 is the Los Angeles County Museum of Art -also worth the visit.
#4 If you have kids, it may be worthwhile getting the bus to one of the shopping malls on the way to Santa Monica ( again take Lot C Shuttle East to the LAX TRANSIT CENTER ,use Bay 3 and take Santa Monica 3 East LINCOLN BL-MONTANA-UCLA) OR to Marina del Rey /Venice Beach ( Start on Santa Monica 3 as above get off at LINCOLN BL and WASHINGTON BL and change to Culver City 1 West (WASHINGTON BL) using a transfer .
At both destinations and easily seen on the way are cinema complexes and big bookstores.Neither of these bus connections are at all difficult.
My choice for a 8 hour layover though is the Getty Museum - you would not regret it.

Thanks a lot ozflier for the very detailed information. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
I will follow your suggestion to visit the Getty Museum.
A welcome opportunity to walk around and stretch the legs - inclusive education.

Or the beach!! Manhattan Beach, Venice and St. Monica are within easy reach of LAX (probably $15-$20/15 min. for a taxi).
Have the taxi drop you off at one of the piers, walk on the beach, rent roller blades or a bike, go for a swim. Then find a nice restaurant. Shopping is also nearby, esp. in St. Monica. Pre-arrange for the taxi to pick you up later.
Not a problem at all. If you check a map, all three are pretty close, safe and very convenient. E-mail me if you need more info.
Manhattan Beach Pier: Manhattan Beach Blvd./Highland Ave.
Venice Beach Pier: Washington Blvd./Pacific Ave.
St. Monica Beach Pier: Colorado Avenue/Ocean Ave.

Viel Spaß am Strand, das ist typischer für LA als Museum. In Venice gibt's sogar Weizenbier vom Faß direkt am Strand!
