Was told cannot use special Gold NZ check in area at AKL (where you can conveniently pay departure tax and avoid customs lines)when transferring from a regional flight - has anyone else suffered this problem - meant lining up at Bank of NZ to pay departure fee and then joining all travellers at customs

Yes this is correct that when transferring from another flight and you have already checked in you cannot use the gold checkin.

Only advice I would have is to purchase the departure tax directly from your TA or by a number of them from the airport.

At CHC you can also purchase the tax from the ATMs so you may also be able to do this at AKL?

I think AKL has one of those annoying 'features' where you must pay your departure tax separately at BNZ. You can't pre-pay.

Actually, you can pay at the Gold checkin desk. YOu just can't enter immigration from the elite entrance - you have to go around to the normal entrance. I've done that before.

So you can skip the queues at Bank of NZ.

Thanks - when I went to the checkin they would not even let me pay the departure tax, perhaps this has now changed. This is despite the regional flight being late and only having about 30mins to departure when I finally got to the Gold check-in - so much for ensuring on-time departures

It is some kind of customs requirement. But they should let you purchase the departyure tax and from memory could only accept cash.

I actually paid by credit card, but they said that i had to go through the "normal" entrance to the restricted area.

not sure why though.
