MilesBuzz! - SFO to Puerto Vallarta - What's a good price?
Just wondering if those of you who often travel to Mexico know how much a ticket from San Francisco to Puerto Vallarta should cost. The cheapest fare I've found is on America West for $362 roundtrip. I don't travel enough to know if this is a good price. I have 8 people going in my party and a price increase or decrease would have a big impact on my budget. I could leave anytime on 8/19/2000 from San Francisco and come back on 8/26/2000.

Try FARE COMPARE at expedia.msn.com It will tell you what the cheapest fare is and for what dates of travel. I am going from Chicago to PVR at the end of May on AA and I was able to use some of the volumebuy certificates and some bumped vouchers, but the base fare was higher, but I can't remember exactly what - in the $400's. I think the only way it could be cheaper might be if you could use vouchers (bought at volumebuy when they have their flex pool) or an entertainment book discount on Continental or NW.

Another possibility is Suntrips. They sell air only or package deals. 1-800-SUNTRIP. They have a website at
http://www.suntrips.com
but it's for information only. No availability listed or booking. Fares are often around $300 roundtrip.
Make sure the fare quote's yu get include all the taxes! The tax portion will cost you another $60-$70.00 on top of the base fare. Thank you Uncle Sam.
Fares will be cheaper for departures to and back on non-weekend days.

I pulled up a fare for $385.92 including all taxes on Alaskaair.com plus if you book online before this sunday May 14th you will get an addition 10% off for a total fare of $347.32.
You have to stop in LA on AS but you would have to stop in Phoenix on AmWest.
I have flown both of these routes. Alaska will definately treat you better.

I don't know where all this deal is available from, but this last Sunday in the austin sunday travel section, they were listing a special to PV, it was for 5D/4N or 6D/5N, it included airfare and hotel at the Westin for $550. Sorry I don't have more info.
Thanks so much for everyone's input. I think the flight on Alaska sounds the best because of the 10% discount and they also have non-stop service.

Kim, I used to live in Tucson and have made the trip to PVA many times. Alaska will definitely be your best bet. Great airline with great service and great specials. Once flew them to Cabo for $100, yes, a C-note!
Where are you staying? Can make a recommendation, if you wish. If you go in Sept/Oct, remember it's rainy season. Oh, the diving is pretty good here, too. Lots of good day trips to enjoy and at 10-1 the dollar goes extremely far there! Have a great trip. Wish I was with you!
Spartacus, did you by chance lose your luggage going down? My luggage tag always said "PVR", not "PVA" and it arrived fine. http://216.167.74.240/forum/biggrin.gif
Kidding aside, I've made the trip 4 winters now and love it there. But I've never found great value in housing, and costs have soared since 1995. Would you care to share your recommendations for accommodations either publically or by email to me?
