Overnight with early departure, generally perfer to be at/near airport so we can sleep in. Is Commodore near/worthy? Is town so close it doesn't matter?

Hrm, can't really comment on hotels close to the airport, the airport is about a 15 min ride from the CBD.

The traffic is very much urban to/from the airport, don't expect an express way.

I've stayed at 2 places, the holiday inn (think it's changed to the centra on avon) and the centra in the city. Found both nice, the centra in the city is very new and modern. If you don't have a car, its probably more worth your while staying somewhere near where the centra in the city is located.

I'm sure other people have thoughts and suggestions. Without being negative to my NZ friends, I didn't find CHCH the most inspiring of places in NZ, Queenstown is always wonderful as is the rest of the South Island!! :-)

I could use this info also. We fly MEL-CHC on AirNZ and arrive after midnight. Just need a place to sleep that night before we pick up our Maui Motorhome the next morning. Any suggestions on a property that would be convenient to the airport and the Maui depot?

You have a number of choices near the airport. The main two being the Sudima Grand Chanecellor and the Commodore Quality Inn. Both are close to the airport with pick ups etc. Both are nice quiet 3* accomodation and reasonably priced.

It is about a $20/15 min cab ride into town, this is christchurch so there is almost no difference in travel time between day and night.

If in town then there are a number of good options - depending on your budget. I would recommend staying near the cathedral square. But in a nutshell you could look at;
- The George (5*) - probably CHC's nicest Hotel.
- Hertitage (5*) - right on Cathedral square
- Millennium (4*)
- Crown Plaza (formerly Park Royal) (4*)
- Holiday Inn on Avon (Formerly Centra) - a bit far out (3*).
- Holiday Inn Downtown (formerly centra) - 3*
- Copthorne - note there are two very close to each other (3*)

And of course a whole range of other hotels, back packers, b&B's and the like.

There is also Motel Mile on Papanui Road which is basically a mile of Motels, and a nice 20 min walk from downtown and 5 miin walk from Hagley Park.

Oh and I think most of the abouve have miles with either QF or NZ.

Any other questions, please ask.

If booking a hotel, may I suggest you look at (for last minute travel):

http://www.wotif.com

and

http://www.lastminute.com.au

There are other sites, but mostly Aussie hotels:

http://www.dingoescape.com
http://www.needitnow.com.au
(no i don't need it now!)

Lastminute you pay directly at the hotel, so you may be able to get for example your stay data (unsure about miles) recorded against your frequent hotel program, but with wotif you have to pay on their website.
