Hi, I was looking at the AZ flight wich goes LHR-LAX-AKL. Obviously it goes the other way as well. I was suprised though that I could not find the flight going from AKL to LHR via SIN or HKG - is that right it olny does the routes above ?
Jon
jongar, i belive nz do fly akl-hkg, but not hkg-lhr - they have the rights to though i think.

AFAIK all NZ flights asia-Europe are LH codeshares.

jongar, I don't want to be pedantic, but Air New Zealand is NZ.
AZ is Alitalia.
You can fly via Asia on NZ codeshares, flown by SQ.
Cheers,
Justin

Probably you are right, most fares allow LH FRA-HKG on LH (but with LH number) so.

i thonk I phrased my question really bad. Does route 1 and 2 only go LHR-LAX-AKL and AKL-LAX-LHR - I always figured it travelled round the world ?
out of intrest, what routes do AKL fly into mainland europe other than LHR ?
Jon
I think NZ also has a LAX-FRA flight, but no RTW service.
I could be wrong, but I think NZ to Europe through the US isn't any slower than through Asia.

The NZ route from LAX-FRA was halted a couple of years back in favour of a code-share arrangement with LH.
NZ is essentially on the opposite side of the world from London so it does not make much difference if you fly via Asia or North America.
LHR-LAX-AKL

LHR-SIN-AKL

LHR-BKK-AKL

I think the only airline in recent times who did a true RTW on their own metal was UA. and that stopped when UA #1/2 via Delhi got pruned from their destinations a year or so back.

I hear the freedoms are being negotiated to allow a Singapore - Heathrow run on NZ metal. I also hear that NZ is planning Auckland to Denver non-stop. Rightfully so, they seem tired of LA and their landing slots are awfully timed for many.

Yes LAX/FRA was canned a little while ago despite the loadings and revenue being high.
NZ 1/2 is basically a AKL/LAX/LHR run which worked quite well getting into LHR, although correct me if I am wrong but now (since 9/11) everyone has to deplane and collect their bags pass security/immigration and recheck which would make this a pain versus flying via SIN/BKK/HKG.
Landing into LAX is often much better if you take NZ6 (AKL/LAX - no LHR continuation) or if you go backwards to SYD and pick up NZ15. Both of which arrive earlier than NZ2 and allow better connexions.
I presume that a 747-400 could fly AKL/DEN and would allow NZ to compete with QF when QF offers AKL/DFW on the 747-LR. But would have to be targetted at the business market as a heap of travel on NZ2/6 does not go further than disneyland!
And given that NZ is making fairly obvious gestures that it is moving cutprice and towards tourism now that business loads seem to have shifted to QF http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif I am not sure on that strategy.

The plot thickens ... Air NZ is bringing back one of their recently 'retired' 747-400's.
Now it cant be for the SYD-LAX, as the plane that does that just sits at SYD the days that it doesn't operate ... and according to our NZFT expert a couple of the 762's are going but that is just a domestic/tasman reshuffle and a 744 is overkill on those markets anyway.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for good fares ex Australia for AKL-LHR via asia!

From what I've heard, AKL-DEN is possible, but they would have to lighten the cargo (theoretically).

I am thinking about *RTW ex-NZ. I have asked travel.co.nz about base price but I figured I can get an answer much quicker by asking knowledgeable fellow flyers here.
Q1) Dorian's *RTW charts states that NZ$3289 as base fare for the Star-One. This price still holds true?
Q2) Buying *RTW ex-NZ in New Zealand is cheaper then buying it ex-Australia in Australia?
I am flying into NZ or OZ from Japan to to start the journey so the point of departure (ex-syd or ex-akl) is not really important; except that I need to go to NAN, so it is more convinient to be ex-akl.
Providing me with your expert knowledge and your experiences are most appreciated.

Atuchan,
Those prices are probably a little off for a Star1. Have you checked out a starlite fare, it is only available in Y, has a more restrictive fare class and has suurcharges but if you can make the lower mileage it is quite cheaper.
Star alliance fares are fairly similar (after currency) conversion between Australia and NZ, although I think NZ is a little cheaper.
An email to www.travel.co.nz (http://www.travel.co.nz) or to the NZ themselves would probably be required to get the exact prices.

Koru Flyer,
Thank you very much for your prompt response! I am still waiting (about 24hrs has passed) a response from travel.co.nz for the latest price but your information helps me greatly.
I understand that travel.co.nz is a solid TA w/good reputation in NZ, am I right?
As for the Star-lite. I am still fiddling my path through global circle mapper to find best route but it seems bit tough to use STARLITE (beside that the fare class is generally "M" instead of "B" isnt' it?).
As for the trip, it is easier to start RTW from AKL and as an added bonus, I do not need a Visa to go to NZ, so probably I will opt for that option.
Looking forward to see (albeit briefly) your beautiful country for the first time and thanks again for your advices!

Yep, Starlite is very restricted by miles and is booked in a lower fare bucket (M?). So you would not be able to use for UA upgrades etc.
travel.co.nz are a legit business who have a webportal. You will get a helpful follow-up email by an agent and some further suggestions on you itin.
They should respond within 24 hours. If you need an agent in NZ bounce me an email and I can refer you on to some in CHC. And of course there is always NZ!

Todays Australian newspaper reports that QF have applied for traffic rights on LHR-HKG.
Seems strange that they would want LHR-HKG, as this route is already flown by two oneworld airlines (BA and CX) and I'm sure there is ample capacity to code share (which they probably already do). What I want to see is a *A carrier do LHR-HKG direct, and of course preferably AirNZ (but it doesn't look like we'll be seeing that for a while at least).
Cheers, Zac

My prediction: QF will code-share HKG-LHR for now, and start this route using A380s when these are delivered (years from now).
