If you go to the EWR web site and look for arrivals (http://www.panynj.gov/aviation/ewrframe.HTM)of SG flights you will find the airline listed as "P.T.Sempati" on the list, between "Northwest" and "Scandinavian".
I did some research: "Sempati" is a domestic airline in Indonesia
IATA Code: SG
ICAO Code: SSR
Known As: Sempati Air
Full Name: P.T. Sempati Air
Country: Indonesia
Callsign: Spirow
Web Site: web.singnet.com.sg/~images/welcome.html
and also
IATA Code: SG
ICAO Code: JGO
Known As: Jetsgo
Full Name: Jetsgo Corporation
Country: Canada
Callsign: Jetsgo
Web Site: www.jetsgo.net/en/index.shtml (http://www.jetsgo.net/en/index.shtml)

* = Controlled duplicate
During the interim period, two-character designators may be duplicated in a controlled environment.

The following criteria shall apply to controlled duplicate designators:

The same code will not be duplicated if the companies:

Publish passengers schedules; or

Publish cargo schedules; or

participate in the industry shared telecommunications facilities except under Banding as in RP 1008; or

at the time of assignment, it is known by IATA that the companies serve the same general geographic area.

In the event that one of the companies with a duplicated designator changes it status, and falls into one of the criteria listed above, the company which had the designator first shall continue too have the use of the code and IATA will change the designator of the other companies which shared the designator.

If an airline has nominated a predesignated point the airline's tow-character designator will not be duplicated.

So the geniuses who run EWR figure the guys from Indonesia are flying the green smiley MD-83 from Jakarta via Trannah.

In case you wanted to know.

Well, a quik google turned up this (http://web.singnet.com.sg/~images/) and it says the timetable updated in '96! So I would guess Sempati no longr around and IATA gave the SG designator to Jetsgo in the meantime.

Airport websites notoriously inaccurate. Remember when someone here found CP still listed on NRT's site, if I recall correctly. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

I believe Sempati Air shut down sometime in 1998, which would explain the SG code being assigned to JetsGo.

I could be wrong but I could have swarn I flew on Sempati(737-200) in 2001 from Bali - E. Timor. I'll have a check this weekend when I get home to verify.

Based on their location they were most likely a subsidiary of Bre-X and JetsGo bought the only asset, the SG IATA code. BTW the reason the flight information is wrong at EWR is that it comes from flightview.com - as stated on the EWR site:
<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Flight information is derived from FlightView data from RLM Software, Inc. FlightView is a registered trademark of RLM Software, Inc. For any questions or comments regarding the Flight Tracker, please contact us</font>
So I wrote to them and asked them if their computer system believes that the flights from YYZ originate in East Timor. No answer yet. I'll post any replies. Spoof responses may be added to fill space below until I get the real one.

You're right it was Merpati.
The trip was quite the experience. A friend of mine was and still is flying over there. Things were fine when I was there but have gone down hill as most of the UN has pulled out in the last year.
