I got this offer in the mail today. I noticed in the fine print on the back that they'll be charging excise tax on the miles awarded.
I hate that!

They charge tax on NW miles they offer now. Not as much fun as actually getting something for free is it ...

I went into the Sprint webpage and if you drill down to the fine print in the rules, they can charge a $20 "early termination fee" if you cancel within 1 year.

It's my understanding that you must contact Sprint CS to receive your credit for switching.
Now includes Sprint PCS

I value airline miles (a little conservatively) at 1 cent per mile, so the 6,000 mile UA/Sprint promotion is worth $60. My local phone company charges $5 to switch long distance carriers. Add the $6 excise tax and $20 potential early termination fee, and the margin on this promotion, and others like it, gets pretty thin. Darn this recession!

Also, there is a toll-free number that you can call that will play back a recorded announcement of who your long distance provider is. Good for checking when the new carrier is activated on your line:
1-700-555-4141.
Update: 1/23/03 - I've edited the URL above to correct the presence of a . at the end of the referenced URL which was causing the link to fail. It should work now. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
Also, I received my confirmation materials from Sprint in the mail yesterday of the switch.

You can also check your local toll carrier
by dialing NPA-700-4141 or 1+NPA-700-4141
(NPA=Area Code) add the 1+ if necessary

I was told by Sprint CS, that you must have a minimum of $1 of usage to activate the FF miles (monthly service fee does not count). Since I use www.onesuite.com (http://www.onesuite.com) for my LD calls, I made a few calls to qualify.

I am confused about switching my cell service. I understand the bonus for residential home usage and the additional miles you get depending on how much you spend on long distance. but other than the 5,000 mile bonus for switching to Sprint PCS, do I then get an additional mileage credit for each dollar I spend on the PCS service? Or, is it possible to have the PCS service billed to the home phone statement where perhaps there the mileage per dollar spent would be credited? Currently my cell phone bill is seperate from my home phone bill and i get no mileage credit for the amount i spend on cellular services. it seems like Sprint is offering 5,000 miles to switch from ATT cell service to Sprint, but then no adidtional bonus for the $100-200 per month that I would spend on the cell service. i intend to switch my home service from ATT to Sprint to take advantage of the UA miles i can get for every dollar spent on home long distance charges, but i am confused trying to figure out how to get mileage for the actual dollars I spend on cellular service. Does anyone have any advice? when i called Sprint they told me that these were different departments and after 30 minutes of transfering back and forth, no one seemed to know. Thanks for any insight that you can provide!

SteveDCA-
I have been getting NW miles for Sprint PCS usage for years (soon to end though). AS miles worked the same way with SPrint PCS.
http://www.alaskaair.com/mileageplan/MileagePartners_Telecom.asp
http://shop.sprint.com/residential/voiceservices/airlines/detail/detail.jsp?airline=Alaska
But you're right, with UA, it seems like tehre is no usage mileage...

Thanks Tenacious.
I signed up last month (Jan.) and my 2500 pts. + 1000 bonus pts. were posted to my UA account on Feb. 9th. Now that is service.
