Cathay Pacific Asia Miles - YVR to get WING-like enlarged lounge ... by Aug 2005

Sorry. Things are slow in Canada.
Heard through somoe CX angels at YVR airport that CX has negotiated with YVR authorities to take over the adjacent Korean Air lounge (now empty) and expand it to a HONGKONG Wing-like lounge.
Possibilities include showers, a noodle bar, and updated features.
No firm decision as to the outcome yet, but expect at least a year before we see this dramatic change at Vancouver airport.

Cathay is also planning AVOD in Y class soon. No firm dates yet.

A Wing like lounge at YVR is also interesting. Curious, will it be shared with other airlines? CX only has 2 flights to and from YVR and those elite pax placed in the "holding area" can't get in.

It'd be nice if BA and CX at YYZ could get a new lounge back where their old one was in the "pier". The current BA Exec Club lounge is on the ground level of what was the old CP Empress Club at T3, and a mile from the gate! Sometimes one wonders why the GTAA goes to so much effort to make life difficult for travellers? But good news about YVR.

Doesn't CX have three flights from YVR daily?

I don't know what lounge BA uses in YVR, but perhaps the new Wing-like facility will become the Oneworld lounge in YVR ? Since just servicing the two departures to HKG and one to JFK each day doesn't quite justify the investment.

BA has its own Terrace lounge at Vancouver, and it shares the lounge space with China Airlines in the early daytime. I think BA Terrace lounge is fairly new and has the typical Terrace look. I can't imagine BA tearing that down... but never says never...
It is good that YVR lounge will get a face lift... it is a major CX station...
Thanks for the news!

To make it truly like the Wing, they'd have to make it open, drafty, granite, and pipe in all the loudspeaker announcements and people noises from the main area of the airport. I hate the Wing.
Well, I don't really *hate* the Wing, but I always wonder that a couple of amenities like the cabanas and the little eatery cause people to overlook the otherwise uncomfortable design. Give me Silver Kris/SIN anytime.

Okay - I should get my title reposted as "PIER-like" lounge.
All future CX lounges will be modelled after the PIER and not the WING.

"Doesn't CX have three flights from YVR daily?"
Yes and no. The YYZ-HKG flight has done a refueling stop outbound at YVR for the past few months, but passengers stay on board. According to another thread on this forum, this flight will return to ANC for this service stop next month.

Up to 5 departures?
YVR-HKG (up to 3x daily inc. the tech stop YYZ-HKG)
YVR-JFK (1x daily)
YVR-YYZ (1x daily IF it makes a tech stop).
but the YYZ pax can't get off the plane to go into the lounge. anyways CX828/829 is going thru ANC instead of YVR next month.

In Fact CX is negotiating with the Airport Authority right now to take over the empty Korean Lounge next door. ^
The lounge will be large and include a First Class private section.
BA have their own lounge on the same level (down the hall) but rent out to China Airlines which would infringe on CX schedules.
Maybe with JFK going non stop with a second flight, they will let the JFK HKG pax off in YVR to enjoy the lounge!
Sorry - no plan for a shower still.

Isn't this what I originally said when I posted this forum above?
HKG-JFK passengers are not allowed to disembark and use airport lounge facilities irrespective if there is a nonstop flight or not. It's the US govt that wants security. They would prefer if you don't go galavanting around the airport.

I find this totally stupid and ignorant of the U.S. govt to do such thing. Infringing on how Canadians operate their airports.
Can't they just park the aircraft at Gate D50/51/or 52 (near the elevator that takes you up to the lounge) at YVR and close off the area which links the international terminal to the domestic terminal with one of those "movable walls" (like the kind they use to seperate the D and E gates) and have an immigration officer standing there checking documentation? (Only those who are transfering from the domstic terminal to the international terminal can bypass the "movable wall" and not the other way around, so people from CX 888 won't "get lost" and mistakenly enter Canada). This way CX pax in-transit in YVR can walk around gate area of the international terminal, use the lounge, and visit the duty free shops and eating establishments. YVR already has the ability for sterile international-to-international transfer! (which seem to be under utilized)
I wonder what it's like for pax flying SIN-FRA-JFK on SQ (one flight number). Is it also the case that pax can't use the lounge in FRA (it seems to me they can)?
What about HKG-NRT-LAX on UA (one flight number)? Can the pax use the lounge in NRT?
I remember flying CX 450 HKG-TPE-NRT, and was able to use the lounge in TPE (I asked the FA prior to landing, and when I got off in TPE, a ground staff was holding a signboard with my name and transit pass and told me to "follow him".)

I suggest you take this matter up directly with the US INS department!

Yes, they can. (I've seen UA even let pax bypass the security screening at NRT apparently to let them make a tighter than expected connection. This I thought was a breach of the security code there.)
I remember I used the YVR lounge on HKG-JFK but it was a long time ago. :)

Wow ! That's earlier than what they told me. Just in time for the Chinese New Year crowds!
I'll be flying off to HK mid Feb. Let's see what offerings they'll have!

When will you depart from YVR? It's kinda useless to report on Feb 3 when you're departing FROM JFK !
