Hi,
I am currently booked on a flight from mel to Syd with qantas at 10am and I think sydney to hong kong at 4pm with Cathay. Although I don't expect an upgrade, do have a better chance of getting one checking in all the way to Hong Kong from the qantas check-in in melb, or should i just take the domestic leg and check in my luggage with the cathay desk in Sydney?

I am a qantas platinum (oneworld emerald) member.
Would appreciate advice.

cheers

Welcome to FT

It is good that you do not expect the upgrade! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I guess that your best shot would be to try in MEL and if that does not work then check in only to SYD and try again. However, remember that QF are the ground handling agents for CX

Bottom line I think is no chance regardless of strategy.

um... B Watson, I think CX has their own set of check in crew in SYD.

REALLY? I just assumed since SQ has 3 flights to CX's two and uses QF for ground handling - I would have thought that CX would have used their oneworld partner for this - are we sure??

The check-in agents at Sydney wear CX uniform...

However in AKL the check-in staff wear CX uniform too, but ground handling is contracted out to Menzies Airport Services; with CX employing a handful of Customer Service Representatives to act as roving troubleshooters.

Just goes to show that the moderator of the CX forum does not always know everything about the airline that he is moderating.

Maybe, this honour should go to StarAlliance Fan for his indepth knowledge of both SQ and CX. Time to vote again guys!

I don't think it really matters where to checkin. Qantas obviously have no rights to issue you an op upgrade at MEL. Even if you checkin at MEL, and IF you are to be upgraded, that will be done at SYD by the CX staff, and new boarding pass will be handed to you upon boarding.

Thank you everyone for your responses.
Also, is there a seperate first Cathay lounge in SYD or do you just use the Qantas one? Sorry if this has been covered. This is my first post to this site.

No, CX use the Qantas lounge facility in Sydney.

I am pretty sure that the check in staff at Syd are CX staff. I had a discussion with them not so long ago about their uniforms and it appeared from their comments that they WERE CX staff , as opposed to ground staff wearing CX uniform.
Definitely the senior people were CX staff.

he he . I also see that guy betsy's nemesis is back. It nearly always makes me chuckle when the troll appears.
