I'm flying F from LAX-HKG-JNB. I will have a 15.5 hour connection in HKG. There is no other option. Does CX provide a day room in one of the airport hotels for F pax? I also understand that the lounge has so called day rooms, if so, do I need to reserve it? how? or is it on a first come/first serve basis?

I have done this twice on award tickets
only...thus , do not know if F fare paying
pax would get a day room at the airport
hotel or not...And only The Pier has day
rooms : first come first serve basis , and
of course , if they are all taken , the
staff there would take number/reservation .
The Pier should already be re-opened by
August 1st .

Can you tell me anything about the rooms at the Pier? Do they actually have a bed? a sofa? a lounge chair?, and if you get one, can you stay for as long as you want? or is it timed?

The rooms at the Pier have a padded chair, a footstool, piped-in music, and a call button that you can use to have an attendant bring you a drink. You can close the blinds so that it's quite dark.

However, none of the rooms I've used or seen has a bed or reclining chair. It's much more of a relaxation room than a day room.

I've done that route many times on CX FC. You'll be treated like a king.

My advise to you is to try to stay awake as much as possible during that lovely 18 hour layover. This way you will sleep on the flights and be rested when you arrive.

I usually go to the Wing upon arrival and take a long bath/nap in a cabana (unlike the Pier's day rooms, you can lie down flat in a cabana). Then I have another breakfast in the Haven.

Around 8:30am, I pass customs and train into Hong Kong and play & eat The day ends with a drink at Felix's in the tower at the Peninsula before training back to the airport.

Upon the return, it's back to the Wing for another bath/shower and dinner. The cabanas are often full but they put your name on a list and it moves along.

If you don't want to go into town, the Regal Aiport (www.regalhotel.com) has day rooms for about $70 if I remember correctly. You'll be able to get a good nap, workout, go swimming... much better than any lounge!

But like I said, you'll arrive in JNB much more on schedule if you try to stay awake that day in HKG.

Have fun. South Africa is one of the world's top destinations.

The cabanas at the Wing do have flat beds of a sort - more like a thin futon. No sheets but they will give you a blanket if you ask. Not the same as a hotel room, though, and better for relaxing rather than sleeping. Another nice thing about the FC portion of the Wing is that they will safely store your luggage for you (in a small room they have for that purpose) if you want to be free to go into town or walk around the airport. We found that a 16-hour connection went by too fast!

the tickets i get from CX will give a day room when there is a long connection in HKG, although i have never taken advantage of this. you can get this even for some economy tickets, but you will probably not get a day room if you are traveling on a redemption ticket. you must get authorization from the CX sales office in the country where you purchased your ticket.

i thought the whole point of traveling in F was so that you could get enough sleep to function properly when you arrive at your destination instead of spending the day resting in a hotel room?

Yes it is, but I will be flying for another 12-13 hours to JNB, and besides, on the return I'm stopping in HKG for 10 days, so I don't see a need to run around HKG and kill myself on the outbound. I will use the lounges extensively, but I thought few hours of peace and quiet would be great too.

Look for a day room at the Regal Airport hotel (OR a good hotel in town and take Airport Express).

Expect to pay aprox $100-$150USD if you can get a day room rate.

I would suggest as others point out (as I've done SFO-HKG-JNB-HKG-LAX) to sleep after dinner on the flight to HKG from LAX.

Grab a shower after landing. Go into HK central via Airport Express. Spend a nice day in HK.... Get back to the airport late that evening. I would then eat on the flight to JNB and sleep. You will be on local time easier!

Some other points to note

- CX in LAX can check your bag JUST to HKG if you plan to stay at the airport regal hotel to grab a shower, change of clothes and just in general to store stuff until the evening. They can do this EVEN though they print your connecting boarding pass from HKG-JNB. Just go o to the first check in to have them check your bag in.

- Use the airport express... nice and quick into central
