Cathay Pacific is preparing to drop Hot Meal service on certain flight (Taipei is on the list). Snack box will be served instead.
Taiwan's EVA Air and China Airlines has announced that all flights to Hong Kong and Macau will no longer serve Hot meal. Instead, EVA Air will serve snack box (a cake), but urges its passenger to eat them when they leave the plane.
Cathay Pacific is seriously looking into this move by Taiwan carriers.

Er... is this a temporary measure due to Sars or a permanent move? I guess it is one way to cut costs but it will be sad to see CX go the snackbox way of so many other carriers.

Err.... please... don't feed me those pathetic boxes like the ones I get from Qantas....
While it was great that CX offered a full meal before on this short flight.. It was often too hurried and it only makes sense to change it to a snack instead....

Sad news! CX has actually experimented with the snack boxes in the past -- serving sandwiches and nice high quality stuff (don't even think it is like the UA boxes or AA bistro bags), but the Asian passengers totally reject the ideas. CX has to drop the idea.
I am curious if this move has to do with the SARS. Maybe it has to do with the longer times in preparing hot meals now or certain procedures...
I don't think the fare on the HKG-TPE route is cheap enough to have the US style service.
But it is always rush to serve hot meals on these flights, but folks seem to get used to it for a long time. Especially on half full flights, CX F/As will have no problems offering everyone a hot meal flight. Also, people don't have a choice of entree, so it is a bit simpler.
Sad...

This have to do with SARS. They'll urge passengers not to open snack box until they leave the plane.
I am not that crazy about the hot meal service on HKG-TPE or HKG-BKK (frankly, most of the time I didn't touch mine), but I hope that this "no hot meal service" policy does not apply to J, or F. It would really be unfortunate if CX cuts even a hot meal service in J or F.

my flights between HKG and TPE this week still had normal meals in F and J.
