I have a ticket issued by AA Advantage for travel in business class on CX from SFO to HK in June. What will happen to issued award tickets for travel on CX if CX cancels all flights as purported in the news today?

Will I be protected on another airline in the same class of service as issued on the award ticket?

No, you won't be protected .. you'll just get your points credited back to your account.

Asked this to an AA EXP agent the other day and she idicated that I would be protected as I had a contract with CX and AA. Not sure if that is true, but it was comforting to hear as I have a CX First award to JNB set for this October.

I had booked a CX award the other day just between HKG and BKK. The flight I wanted was cancelled. AAdvantage offered another flight that day. But no award seats were available on the other flights. So the award was cancelled and points recredited back to my account without a fee.

AA certainly didn't offer any other alternative. If there are no CX award seats, AA was under no obligation to find a seat even if the flight is empty. They would offer 'alternate' flights, but not alternate airlines.

If CX cancels the flight to JNB altogether, there is simply no other way for you to get there unless you cough up more miles and go on BA.

The agent I spoke just to said she thinks the points will be recredited, that's about it. The $100 itinerary change fee is now waived if you reroute onto another carrier (I switched from CX to JL for ORD-SIN in mid-June and return end-September) whereas less than 2 weeks ago (I think just about 5 days ago, in fact) I was told that there was no policy in place with regards to CX awards, and therefore cancellation and change fees still applied then. No idea when this change in policy came about, or how things figure for outright cancellations. In any case I am rather disappointed at having to give up my first A340-600 flight, but that's another story I guess.

<edited to say that no offer of protection was made and I didn't ask either, and that of course any difference in miles required still have to be coughed up>
