Cathay Pacific Asia Miles - Round 3 of flight cuts

Here we go again. CX have just announced that schedules will be slashed by 37% as the airline takes action to combat the effect of Sars and the war in Iraq. A long list of flight cuts is now posted on www.cathaypacific.com. (http://www.cathaypacific.com.) Particularly sad is that a number of longhaul flights are being cancelled, notably:
The daytime service to London is dropped entirely (all 4 weekly flights cancelled).
Vancouver is cut to a daily from twice daily.
Melbourne is cut to a daily service only.
Paris goes from daily to thrice weekly.
Amsterdam is reduced from 5x to 3x a week.
Frankfurt goes from daily to four times weekly.
Sydney loses four of fourteen flights a week.
Very very very sad to see this list of cancellations... Auckland isn't affected yet but I seriously doubt those three extra flights scheduled to kick in from June will do so if the Sars scare continues.

Does CX offer any sorts of compensation for inconvenience caused, for those who were booked on the cancelled flights?

Oh Oh I am affected... I am booked on CX 838/939 on May 22-26... now wonder when AA will call me. I will give them a week notice... Better think about an alternative plan.
Sad news!

Isn't this worse than the post-9/11?

I think the effect from this SARS'thing will be FAR worse than the 9/11 event.
I am sure we will see a HUGE number of Tourist related businesses going down the drain in Hong Kong.
It is a catastrophy for the Industry.

Not only Hong Kong. The entire far east will be very badly affected. Bali bombings followed by SARS scare is going to rip the tourist industry in the far east where many many people depend on the tourist income.

9/11 was just a start of disaster for the Aviation industry. At that time, incidents were more or less "fire on the otherside of the river" for CX. (Chiangi, you should know this phrase in Japanese)
Started with USA couple years ago.
Spread to Tropical Island.
Oil price hikes ate profit away worldwide.
War breaks out in Middle East.
Outbreak of disease in Asia.
So, it seems like something will happen in Europe sooner or later, and CX will be really screwed.
CX stock price is tumbling over the past week. Let's see if it hits the value lower than post 9/11

I sincerely hope not. They are in enough trouble as it is, losing 10 m HKD per day. Don't bankcrupt the airline with stupid compensation requests. Instead, get online and buy a ticket.

This is very sad indeed, although the cuts are expected. It just makes sense for them to cut and consolidate flights instead of operating flights with 10% load. Better to inconvenience passengers than to lose money!
I'll have lots of sorting out to do with my flights to SIN, BKK, and TPE. Don't you just love this aspect of flying? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
Once SARS is gone, it will all come back. Many are **postponing** travel due to the customs checking, denial of visas and the hysteria. I sure hope some of these businesses are recording some of the bogus information broadcast on the media organizations and will sue them for creating this mess.
The latest bogus info was put on FOXNEWS saying people can carry the SARS virus without any symptoms. Good or bad bogus news?? If there are "no symptoms", then no more visa entry medical checks and we can all fly again. Or is it just to make more people scared to get people to watch TV as long as possible rather than fly airplanes.
Good news is Thailand is considering dropping the visa medical entry check after the Asian holidays, however at this time it is remaining in place. They are watching as the weeks go by. This according to The Bangkok Post, good newspaper!
SHADO
But the biggest problem is that they don't know when SARS will be in control, that is the greatest concern. They don't know if the situation will improve or deteriorate.
