Cathay Pacific Asia Miles - companion awards - miles can be from fare-paying pax only ?
a question on companion awards in Asia Miles...
I have a paid business class ticket...I want to issue a companion award (less miles than a regular award) for my friend who's joining me...I want to use her miles since they are expiring sooner...
However, MPO then told me...miles can only come from my own account, i.e. from the fare paying passenger...before, I thought that as long as the companion is traveling with me on all flights, the miles for that award can come from me, my companion, or even a third-party...being together on the same flights is the only requirement...
apparently...MPO told me it's not true...anyone has experience with this ? is it really that strict a requirement ? of course, I can still use miles from my own account, but just that it is a bit better to use my friend's expiring miles...
thanks !!

How are you going to reclaim the miles from your friend, just interested...

Hi tedhl, you should know better.
Not only do the miles have to come from your account, you'd have to fly the exact same segments on a paid ticket for the exact same route.ie if your friend is originating from HKG-SIN-HKG, then you'd have to purchase a ticket of the similar routing. The route cannot come from a segment or two of a RTW ticket.
FYI - if your friend's miels are expiring... just get a regular award. It's really not that much different from companion ticket.

I didn't know you had to purchase an "exact" same routing to issue a companion award. For example, if I'm doing NRT-HKG-SYD return, and I want to issue a ticket for my mom to join me on HKG-SYD segments, is that's not possible?
My understanding is that as long as you are travelling on each of the segment (apart from RTW, as you say) on the same flight, then you can issue the award.

I didn't know about that rule...I thought, she's still my companion in this case...I just did not know that I have to pay the miles to invite the companion, rather than the companion paying for her own ticket with miles...anyway, good...I just wanna confirm the agent was not misinformed only !! and thanks everyone here for the confirmation !!

it's in fact my girlfriend...so it's not really a problem, I "managed" the earning and burning of miles in both accounts myself anyway... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

her miles actually are not expiring that soon...but by late 2003 I think...just that it's expiring a bit earlier than mine...so I think I should still be able to find good use of her miles later this year...
again, thanks everyone for the replies !!

GB, with respect, you are wrong on this. I regularly get companion business class tickets for my girlfriend when I am using segments of a OneWorldExplorer ticket. You simply have to have paid tickets in the same class for the same itinerary. My girlfriend's ticket is endorsed that she must travel with me.
