Cathay Pacific Asia Miles - 2 pax travelling in different classes...

This is probably not the most appropriate subject heading but I couldn't think of anything better. So, here is my question.

I have my mother and grandmother flying on CX-114 from MEL-HKG. One is an award business ticket and another is just economy paid ticket. Since I don't see how I can upgrade discounted Y ticket with AA miles then it seems that one of them will have to fly in coach. Or maybe there is a way to upgrade? I only have AA miles and QF points.

If I cannot get an upgrade then what seats would be the most appropriate for them, so that my mother causes the least inconvenience to other pax and crew while checking on grandmother who is 88 y.o. and speaks no english?

BTW, what is the legal connection time at MEL from QF-401 to CX-114?

What subclass is your grandmother booked in? If in YBHKLMS it would be upgraable for AsiaMiles so you might be able to do a deal with someone.

Otherwise, if it was me I suspect I would trade the business award for an economy one and recover some miles. Though last time I was in this situation (HKG-BKK-HKG) I had a DONE ticket and my gf had an AD economy ticket. The outcome was that I took a voluntary downgrade on the way out and she got OP-upped on the way back, which seemed like a fair result!

If your grandmother speaks Cantonese or Mandarin then the CX crew will be perfectly happy dealing with her. Other languages might be a bit crew-specific.

I'm supposing your grandma is the one who's sitting up front. In any ways, if your mother chooses to visit your grandma, it would cause disturbance to biz passengers, and crews won't be too happy if she does it often. Pros is that it's a day flight, so she wouldn't wake up sleeping pax, but cons is that people will observe her.

Even if she ask for upgrade at the check-in, I would doubt anything would happen. However, she can try to talk to the chief pursur when she enter the cabin, and explain that she will need to make frequent visits to her mother. Depending on the seat availability, they might simply invite your mother to be seated in the biz cabin. (instead of causing disturbance to other pax).

I do not recommend issuing a Y-award, it's simply not worth the points, considering how cheap you can buy Y ticket this time of the year.
