*disclaimer-- I know this topic may have been discussed in the past, but after 10+ searchings without explanative results, I've decided to ask you guys*

That said, I was wondering if anyone can tell me what I'm in for:

I'm considering booking with DL to HKG. Flight path will be DL MSY-ATL-NRT, with a connection to CX in Tokyo. My Delta portion is an upgradeble coach fare, but the agent could not/did not tell me what fare type my CX fare was. Total amount came to $1370. Assuming this is a level of upgradeable fare, could I use AA miles to do so? Would the fact that it's booked by DL make any difference?

i don't think you can AA because the ticket has to be issued by AA on AA ticket stock.

You can't upgrade CX using AAdvantage miles for any discounted coach fare, it has to be a full Y or B fare (which would be over $3K), so you didn't miss out by not having an AA issued ticket. Also upgrading NRT-HKG is wasteful, the upgrade is the same for trans-pacific, e.g. JFK-HKG.

Other than the fare restriction, I think it's been mentioned on FT that upgrade travel has to originate from N. America (i.e., you can upgrade N. Am. - Asia - N. America but not Asia- N. Am. - Asia).

That applies to the All-Asia pass I do know (with cash, not mileage) but does it also apply to any such upgrades using AA miles?

ConcordeBoy, I still suggest we just pay the difference. If you'll look at the cost, it's not really that much over. Or hell, it's only a few hours, bite the bullet!

A few AA agents I talked to said upgrades may be done for Asia-N. America-Asia. I think the AA website says 'between,' not 'from ... to.'
