Cathay Pacific Asia Miles - Upgrade from HKG to LAX?

I just returned from HKG on my first round trip with CX. I must say I was quite impressed with the airline on the whole. The purpose of my post is to ask a question about the complimentary upgrade to business class I received on the return trip. I am AA plat and I was traveling with two companions with no status. I was pretty stunned when we were all given an upgrade to business and I just had to ask if this was a rarity or whether it happens with some regularity for a platinum member flying transpacific on CX.

If the flight's overbooked, CX will upgrade their members first. Then Oneworld elite members down the line. If you and your companions were on the same PNR, then I guess your status pulled them thru.

It's not the norm, but it is also the peak summer months of travels to asia so flights are overbooked.

I do indeed now understand how great CX is - my education was both swift and bittersweet. I have flown almost exclusively American since I started traveling extensively about a year ago and I didn't know what I was missing. The service was superb, the flight attendants were young and cheerful, and the food and entertainment were way better than anything I had experienced. Really, the flights both ways were a breeze. IMO a great airline. Will hopefully be making that trip many more times in the future. Also loved Hong Kong...

Let me say they do not upgrade unless overbooked. We tried coming back from Hong Kong... We were both Platinum.. but the flight was only 70% full so no dice.. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif But did get an upgrade from HKG to KUL in Business.. wish it was HKG to LAX.. was in Coach http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

Hey Alchemist...were you on 882 on 8/29? Was that you in 3A? I overheard 3A mentioning an upgrade, hence the question. If so, I was sitting in 2A that day...small world!

In your experience, what day(s) of the week is currently most likely for a (operational) upgrade from economy to Business on the CX flight LAX - HKG for a Oneworld Emerald status traveler (BA EC NA Gold/ AA EXP)?
