While booking seats on CX, I was told that HKG-JNB seating is 2-2-2 in F while on HKG-LHR it is 1-2-1. Does that mean no flatbeds on the HKG-JNB sector?

Yes - it would seem so. There are only 6 or 7 340s left with the old F, and while there is plenty of space, the seats don't go flat. You'll still get the caviar, vintage champagne and beautiful women though http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I recently experienced the old F on the A340 on a flight from KIX to HKG. It was fine for the short flight, but I would not be happy with it on a longhaul. My biggest gripes are having a seatmate (I am just not comfortable sleeping next to a stranger, who may well smell), the fact that the legrest doesn't go completely horizontal and the substandard tray table (no comparison wit the table on the Betsy seats).

The aircraft I flew on was scheduled the operate the JNB flight that evening and it seems that this route just doesn't get the premium seats. The same goes for SQ on its SIN-JNB flights, so it is not unique to CX. Must not be a very high yield route.

I've taken that HKG-JNB serveral times with the old F seat. It is NOT a bed. But it is not bad. The key is that sometimes you need to open the armrest and use the manual levers under the clear plastic door to get the footrest to come up all the way and the seatback to go down all the way. For some reason the electric motors don't always go the limit. When's it's not horizontal, every cm counts!!

I guess it depends when you are flying HKG-JNB. It seems that the 747's are used during the summer (December) going to South Africa. At least I hope so, as that is when I am flying.

When are you going? The CSR at Cathay Pacific told me that all their planes will be converted to the new J/F in a few months. Could be that the old F will be gone by the time you fly?
