Cathay Pacific Asia Miles - How is the food at The Pier?

View Full Version : How is the food at The Pier?

I'm flying CX next week and I was just wondering whether I should go to the Wing for breakfast or to the Pier. Haven't had a chance to visit the Pier yet (just walked passed it) so is it worth going there (assuming my flight was leaving from those gates).

The food is identical. I was at The Wing yesterday and asked the dining room manager whether there was a difference, and he said it was from the same kitchen and the same dishes. My flight was leaving at a Pier gate, but I went to the Wing because the Pier wasn't open yet (only opens at 8 am). Note this is for the F food, I have no idea if the C food is the same (but why would it be different?).

My relatively inexperienced observation (having been through both lounges on Saturday) is that there was ZERO difference in the food offerings on the F side in each lounge. Ditto that for the morning coffee/pastry selection in business class. What I'm not sure is whether or not The Pier has an equivilent to the Noodle Bar in The Wing.

The Pier has a Noodle Bar just like the Wing. And the windows face airside, so you if you like, you can admire the planes taxing.

For Internet junkies who don't travel with their laptops (might be an oxymoron), the Pier has rows and rows of computers for your use.

Between the business class sections of The Wing and The Pier, the food is nearly identical.

Both have a noodle bar (excellent wantons and spicy peanut curry noodles on 4/6/02).

Both have petits sandwiches (vegetarian and meat).

Both have dim sum (two types of meat dumplings with soy sauce and vinager on the side).

Both have warm rolls and small pastries.

Both have long bars and coffee bars.

However, it was only at The Wing where I found Haagen Dazs (sp?) Ice Cream.

I prefer the Pier, just because on my visit last weekend, it was much less crowded, much more tranquil and serene. Obviously the furniture looks and feels newer. Quite frankly, some of the furniture pieces in The Wing look a bit worn. Finally, the shower rooms in The Pier are more spacious and obviously newer.

The Pier is a bit of a hike from where most transpacific flights depart. But if you have a couple of hours to kill, I'd check it out.

He's the co-ordinator in charge of the Marco Polo Club... or something like that.

Kester Yim's correct title is:
Manager, Marco Polo Club

I think there is a distinctive difference between a "Coordinator" and a "Manager" Guy Betsy! Please provide correct information.

Ahh - the long awaited retort to GB's post from a few days ago.

Oneworld Fan, you should have written, "...a DISTINCT difference between...", rather than use the word "distinctive".

If you require GB to post correct information, I beg you to make your request/demand using correct English.

From MikeinSIN, defender of all things GB! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

(And yes, he can fight his own battles!)

On a more serious note, GB is one of the most knowledgeable/respected people around here, both technically and by virtue of having travelled a lot..

Apologies to ALL. I know this isn't my forum, but GB is a good friend of mine.

I agree with francophile's comments. If I remember correctly, food service for The Wing and The Pier is through The Peninsula Group or one of their affiliates. Note however, that The Pier does have a Juice Bar.

Good ******* grief MikeinSIN! I'm not defending oneworld Fan, but since you bothered to correct his English, I should add that your use of "a lot" does not qualify as proper English either. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

So he's who we talk to about getting a greater selection of food at the Pier?

thanks for the information. So it seems like there is no difference in the food between the F Wing and the F Pier. Looks like I will be trying out the Pier if my flight leaves from that area.

Thanks MikeinSIN! However I do have to point out to you that there is someone on FT that goes under the name of GB so as to not confuse myself(Guy Betsy) and it! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

RE: JUICEBAR at THE PIER. Unfortunately it is located at the Business Class section of the LONG BAR.

Incidentally, The BRITISH are better at ENGLISH than the AMERICANS! Which probably explains why the BA board has all the fun these days!

While I haven't visited the BA board for some time, I hope you're not saying this because Pucci made it her business to tell pegasus to capitalize his Flyertalk postings.

HI there...

Once again, I offer my apologies...

And yes, "extensively" would have been a more better choice than the otherer words that which I wrote... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I stand corrected and will spank myself 10 times with something my Mother doesn't know I own!

Have a great weekend and I promise to have much better manners the next time I gate-crash... lah!

Supplicatingly Yours

What is your question? This topic is about food quality at The Pier, and the answer is the food is as good as ever. There are regular (seasonal?) changes in the food content; I've only tried the F side and that is quite good (sometimes better than the onboard food) but not uniformly good. The sushi is sub-par, for example, as are the soups. But the dim sum and the roast beef are excellent (opposite ends of the spectrum). The champagne is Lanson. Some people rave about the Noodle Bar (on the J side).

Nope... certain people around here still have an inexplicable need to attack Guy Betsy for no tangible reason.

Oh wait... you were asking about changes to The Pier/The Wing, not the thread, eh? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Yes, the Lounges.

GB, can take care of himself!

Edited to thank #6 for the information.
As you know the greatest part of travel is in the preparation. Like in food preparation and anticipation, not in the eating, which is relatively over with quickly. Then you have to do the dishes and clean up after all that shopping. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

just an encounter but it is not of anything important.

I don't know which of the following in effect:

1. "Bowl" count required for the staff
2. "Pricing" for CX to 3rd party provider
3. Staff's inflexibility to request
4. Staff just ingore me (I am not a beautiful lady)
5. CX don't allow bad "HK-style" of mixing food...

but I just request to have wonton on the spicy noodle!! "NO" is the answer from the staff...

Arr... maybe I should just order two and discard the noodle under the wonton, but I am not that insane.

(edited for spelling)

Interestingly, the glossy brochure which the Marco Polo Club has just sent to me says "The Haven is our First Class restaurant at The Pier. It provides an environment that is quite simply "a haven" where you can select from an a la carte menu or our extensive buffet."

I wasn't aware of the a la carte bit - has anyone tried this? What is the menu like?

(I have ordered "cooked to order" bacon and eggs in The Wing, but I wasn't aware that it extended to full a la carte.)
