Is there any way that a commoner can find out if a specific route is served by the old or new 343 configuration in first? Specifically, I am thinking about the HKG-JNB route and HKG-TYO route.

Don't trust the information you get. CX schedules the new 343s on most flights then makes last minute changes to reality. See several other threads on this.

Thanks Paul. I do understand that, since there is one day that a 747 is listed as going to Bali. I don't think I have been on a DPS flight that was over half full on a 330, and I have been on 5 now. But the reason I asked about these (and the Tokyo is now a moot point for me personally), is because they are pretty prominent longhauls. I wanted so badly to get the JNB trip done when the 747 was being run, but couldn't in time. I guess that is a moot point for me also, since I don't really have a choice but to fly CX on that route, and can't use the SA codeshare. Just wondered, though, if someone could find out, even if it's a day or two ahead. Presumably by calling Cathay, I guess, but is there another place?

I had both 34C and 744, both with new J, a few times so far this year on HKG-NRT. The last one was last week. It was showing 343. The earliest flight out of NRT and had F. This first flight out of NRT is usually without F. I was wondering whether it was a last minute change to 34C or a 343 with new J.

Are the 343's HKG-ROM always the config with first class beds?

Here it is more simply: you won't know for sure until you are on the aircraft if it is new or old J.

Here is one exception: if you somehow know that a new J aircraft left HKG for SFO/YVR/YYZ/FCO/JNB..., you can be pretty sure it will be new K on the return because it is the same equipment. By knowing one left HKG, I mean eyewitness reports, not what CX may have had in their schedule.

Sorry!
