Cathay Pacific Asia Miles - Overnighting at Regal Airport Hotel in HKG? DON'T !!

Just because it is the only hotel for miles doesn't call for this kind of service or attitude!

I booked a room at the Regal Airport Hotel tonight as I arrive from SIN and connect to travel to DPS the next day with Techgirl when she arrives from DFW via SFO.

I couldn't find a good rate on the webs, so I called the hotel directly.

They first offered the 'special' - HK$1120. But really, for that kind of money, I'd rather take the train into town and still save money! After much prodding, I was advised that I could get a special overnight rate. Check in after 10pm and checkout before 9am for HK$499 nett (inclusive of taxes and service). So I said go for it. She asked for my number and fax, which I gave and from that she can see that I am not a HK resident.

Anyway, I checked in and was told very abruptly by the check-in person that I cannot use this rate because it's for local residents only. I told him that I know nothing of this and I have been simply offered this rate. If I knew it was for HK residents only, would I bother to book knowing full well that I do not have a HK ID card? But since this was the rate confirmed to me, the hotel should at least honor it.

Something that he just doesn't understand... he kept saying that he cannot honor the rate because I have to be a resident of HK. I keep repeating myself that I was offered this rate with only the time conditions. I then ask to speak to the manager. HE came and asked me what he can do. I told him to ask the check-in person. They chatter away in Cantonese.

The manager said that NO, he cannot give me that rate because it states very clearly that ... HELLO??? What ever happened to CUSTOMER SERVICE??

After much *****ing (from me), he disgrudgingly said that he will honor the rate this time but literally wagged his finger at me NOT TO DO IT AGAIN. I wagged it back at him and said NOT to tell me about it but rather TRAIN his staff to read rules and wag his little pinkie to the staff who booked me this rate and gave me grief instead. No apologies from him.

Room:
Really really bad condition. Something that in HK itself could only charge $800 for and nothing else. I really will not pay anything higher than $499 really. Sheets are dirty, carpet well, you get the idea.

Oh yeah, no Asiamiles miles either.

WELCOME TO HONGKONG!

I found a reasonable rate at $530 plus 13% government tax and service charge. This is the Cheapest "Early Bird" Rate and is for booking 56 days out. Otherwise, I agree the prices are a little steep. http://www.regalairport.com/mmm/regalairport/index.jsp?id=583

I was there a few weeks ago and was amazed that this hotel is only 3.5 years old. The quality of construction finish in my room was poor. In the bathroom, some of the tiles were on the verge of falling off and the place hadn't had a 'deep' cleaning in a long time. Overall, the rooms looked like a US Hilton that was desparately in need of refurbishment.

Of course, I was there on CX' dime, so I wasn't terribly disappointed.

I have to overnight in HKG today and I was going to stay at the Regal. Usually when on business I stay at the Mandarin but certainly don't want to pay those kind of rates for what will be a less than 9 hour stay.

Any recommendations for something cheap downtown?

Thanks in advance.

Now now children Shout stop picking on Guy Betsy and Guy Betsy don't be so sensitive, he did right joke at the end.

Back on the subject of hotels in particular this one at the airport, I guess this is why monopolies are out lawed, there is not alot of choice for those travelling via HKG and staying for a few hours and hoping to get some rest or a quiet place.

Does anyone know if the Regal Airport has an agreement of exclusivity with the airport authority?

MGM try the Panda Hotel, it is in Tsuen Wan, I wouldn't consider it down town but it is one of the closer ones and goes for about $500 a night.

It's no Mandarin but for nine hours stay it should suffice. The rooms are fairly good and there are many eating establishments there plus a huge bar, many companies cutting on costs house their staff there.

Thanks for the suggestion CLK. In the end I decided to take the red-eye to Singapore - save on a hotel bill and get more time in Singapore. Not looking forward to feeling like crap during the day though http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif.

A 5 star hotel in Singapore still costs less than a 3 star in Hong Kong!

Enjoy SIN... but be warned.. it has been VERY hot in recent days.

I'm not saying that the Regal airport is up to HK standards or that the service is nice. But the location is great if you have a short short stay. It's not worth avoiding just out of spite.

Otherwise, the Airport Express can get you to many of HKs wonderful hotels in 22 mins, several of which are walking distance from the Central airport express station.

Guy Betsy it was a joke, you should really chill out. All your frustrations would be better served taking an anger management course.

Singapore is a beautiful place MGM and why not spend more time there, just try to avoid those who blindly fly the flag for them, don't want to spoil your trip do you.

I stayed at the Regal in 11/99 and wasn't particularly impressed. I had the feeling it wouldn't age gracefully based upon the cheap feeling of the construction/treatments/fixtures and haven't returned since. I recall paying about HK$700 for a room and full breakfast buffet.

As for the Panda Hotel, it is a member of the Golden Tulip chain and offers some very good rate packages with complimentary airport transportation.

The worst airport hotel I've ever stayed in is the CKS Airport Hotel at TPE.

Dear SHOUT, your time would be more conducive if you refrain from making such *jokes* on FT. I don't appreciate it, and honestly, it is in poor taste. Unless the hookers you refer give out FF miles, it is not relevant to FT. You post your question, I answer it my way. Clear cut.

Guy Betsy you post comments far more insulting than the joke about "your hooker." Conducive is subjective, and poor taste is not something you are in the position to comment about.

If you are so sensitive about "your hooker" even if it is clear that it is a "joke" then you are seriously in need of a vacation to relax or a retreat to the hills of Thailand living the life of a monk.

The fact that it is a potential mileage earner for the first airline who dares to think out of the box and allow you to earn mileage makes "your hooker" relevant.

Just imagine Guy Betsy, YOU may have millions of miles in a year, dirty sheets-who cares, you can buy your own from the money you save on tickets.

Peace
