You're allowed 2 pieces of luggage to the USA, not based on weight. Each piece should be no more than 70 lbs.

For transpacific flights, 'extra' is based on additional pieces, not weight again.

You should therefore check with CX how much it will cost per piece. Then get the largest suitcase you can find for that!

Thanks Guy Betsy-I took your advice & called CX-they claim they can't tell me-it's determined at the airport when I get there!I thought maybe there was a language barrier so I asked the hotel reception to call-same answer!I had someone at home call but they were told to call Bali for the local regulations.Oh well,we'll soon find out!

I have never been charged for excess leaving from Bali (or on any other flight in Business / First Class). They are normally quite good in Business / First. I checked in 4 bags on a Business Class flight (the flight was full) from Bali - SYD and they did not even blink.

Arrived home safe & sound & wanted to post the outcome for anyone interested.I exchanged money the night before departure in case I had to pay excess fee. When I got to the airport with my bags, not only did I check my 2 monster bags with no fee,I was allowed to check in my carry-on too! However, they are now weighing the bags you want to carry on & if it's over-it must be checked in.

I have been charged in 1st by EK when I had 110 Kg to check in out of the 40 allowance. BA at LHR can be pretty strict too.
