Cathay Pacific Asia Miles - How to calculate required mileage for award ticket

On the Asiamiles website I find myself confounded by the Mileage Calculation page when trying to determine the required number of miles for an award ticket. Can anyone give me guidance on how to do it?

If an award request requires a change of flight in Hong Kong, do you have to enter it as two segments? (ie: JFK-JNB would go in as segment JFK-HKG, then HKG-JNB.) If you put in the JFK-JNB in only one segment then you get 140,000 miles necessary for first class, even though the one-way miles are something like 14,000. I'm confused.

Similarly, were I wishing to book a flight on American Airlines, say STL-ORD-MAD how would the machine estimate the miles required? Does it just use the one-way distance between origination and destination regardless of intermediate points?

Thanks
