I will have to purchase a roundtrip ticket from Canada to Australia for coming Febuary. I want to leave in early Febuary with open return, but my travel agent tells me that the low season starts on Febuary 25 and ends on May 8th. This seems rather unreasonable to me, because I thought January 9 onward is the start of low travel season.
Can someone confirm the dates for shoulder period, peak period, and low period?
Thanks!

probably because of the chinese new year, which is on feb 12 in 2002 ? feb 25 is the monday about two weeks after chinese new year...so it seems reasonable...

I thought of that possibly with lunar new years too, but does CX simply set up a "peak season" due to Chinese new years? I thought peak season only apply to Xmas or summer travel. Besides, I thought that chinese new year will increase the prices for ex-HK flights, not the inbound to Hong Kong... But vancouver's got crazy amount of chinese people, so that would still make sense to me...
Was it due to it is summer time in Australia? Just a thought.

of course CNY is peak season.
peak season can be set up any time.
i think easter is also peak
technically it is very easy to do.
one way i can think of (guess) is by blocking all the lowest fare class seats and force you to purchase a more expensive class.
if dec20-jan1 is peak but feb10-20 is not,
one could almost argue that is racial/cultural discrimination http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif
but the fact is simply demand driven.

Confirmation from my agent:
High season ends on January 9th.
Low season from Jan 10th to Feb 7th.
Then shoulder/high season again from Feb 8 to 24th.
Then the low season from Feb 25 onward.
If I travel on high season, the ticket cost CAD$70 more. This was rather cheap, I was expecting a lot more.

It's not the 'season' you should be wary about but rather if you can even get a seat during Chinese New Year!
