How far in advance do you generally have to
request award seats for travel on CX from SFO/LAX to BKK in c class?
Is is impossible to get?
What fare code do they generally use
for this booking?
many thanks

'U' is the booking class.
Assuming you have AsiaMiles and you have a Marco Polo Club membership number (or does AsiaMiles number also work?), you can check the award inventory at any official CX web sites.

If you're booking through AAdvantage, their inventory is about the same as Cathay Pacific's. But with flights to/from SFO/LAX cut to one each, award seats may be a little hard to come by for the next few months. Do book early if you can.
If the seat you want is full, well.... on AAdvantage, there's nothing you can do except to keep calling and checking everyday.
Only if you're an Asiamiles member will you be allowed to waitlist on an award booking. Hence, Marco Polo members will get first priority when award availabilities open up.

yes, Asia Miles number/PIN should also work...just go to "check fares and availability" at www.cathaypacific.com (http://www.cathaypacific.com), log in using your MPO/AM account number/PIN, and choose the option to redeem awards instead of to purchase tickets...

CX flight searches on the internet can be a hassle. Try building a complex itin where you request each leg seperately.
EG: SFO-HKG; HKG-BKK, BKK-HKG, HKG-SFO
I've found CX availability in F to be relatively easy to get, even late on. I was able to book LHR-HKG-YVR in F on 9/11 for travel on 9/14. I made the booking as the second tower was falling so I doubt many people had changed their plans yet.
