Cathay Pacific Asia Miles - Award Travel on CX through AAdvantage miles

Hi guys,
I'm not sure which board to post it on, but I guess people here would be more knowledgable about award travel on CX.. Anyways, I was thinking of redeeming an award ticket from the US to JNB sometime early next year. Since the F class award is only 140,000 AAdvantage miles, I thought it was quite a steal.. However, with the award tickets, am I eligble for stopover in HKG? If so, how many times can I stopover? I was thinking of doing BOS-JFK-HKG(stopover)-JNB-HKG(stopover)-JFK-BOS. Is this routing possible? Or do I have to fly directly to JNB without a stopover? The AAdvantage site doesn't give much information on this.
Thanks!
Terence

Tfung,

Yes, you can stop over without charge. I currently have a ticket in my hand where we am stoping over both ways on a AA award tkt.

An aside: I've enjoyed your Trip Reports very much and hope to post a report this weekend on these flights as good as yours!

Certainly can stopover in HKG both ways. I did a trip to Bali earlier this summer on F award and was allowed to stop-over even at the US gateway city.

My itinerary was SKB-SJU-JFK(s/o)-HKG(s/o)-DPS(s/o)-HKG(s/o)-LAX(s/o)-MIA-SJU-SKB. I agree this was quite a steal for 135K miles.

I seem to remember the last time I did this (back in June) that I was only allowed to stopover once and not both ways. However, that was at the time of booking and after the ticket was issued we had changed a bunch of dates and without thinking stopped both ways in HKG. Looking back, no one asked and said anything.

Now, I am not sure whether I just encounted an AA agent who wasn't familiar with the rules (about stopping both ways) or I and the other people on FT were lucky?

On an award ticket you are only allowed ONE stopover. The other times you may stop only within 24 hours of a connection, in which case it won't be considered a stopover.

AA/CX gateway points , ie JFK and LAX , you may stopover as well.

This sounds like a UA award to me .... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif No offense meant.

I don't know about CX tickets on AAdvantage miles but AAdvantage does allow two stopovers for JL award tickets. I had one ORD-o/NRT-HKG-o/NRT-JFK in F. AA is quite certain that two stopovers are allowed.

You think tha's bad? BA doesn't allow any stopovers on a partner award! This is the only reason I didn't take advantage of their otherwise excellent 2-for-1 mileage transfer promotion with Diners Club that they have each year. Actually, the rules may be different for the mix-and-match oneworld award, but for the regular partner awards on CX, JL, AA, etc., this is the case.

Someone brought this up a few months ago. Some say they managed to get a stopover everywhere while others got none. All like the bridgekeeper scene? I got a YVR-SYD award ([i]via/[i] LHR and BKK) in FC from CP. Only stopover I was allowed was in LHR and once only.

FWIW, the AA csr voluntarily offered me stopovers in HKG in both directions plus at LAX, if I wanted them, for this award itinerary on AA/CX:
SBA-LAX-HKG-JNB-HKG-LAX-SBA.
This led me to believe that multiple stopovers on CX are indeed possible.

I'm leaving tomorrow on an AA/CX award ticket (First Class). We were able to get 3 First Class tickets with little or no problem. We were only able to confirm 2 F class seats on the LAX-HKG flight so we did a voluntary downgrade to business for that leg. We kept calling, and eventually last week they opened up the 3rd F class seat for us.

We are flying on an Open-Jaw ticket IAD-LAX-HKG-BNE, SYD-HKG-LAX-IAD. We were also offered stopovers in HKG but we didn't use them.

Enjoy CX First Class even though there's the plastic cutlery!

That's news to me. Are we all talking about BA's Executive Club North America? When BA restructured EC in April this year, they informed me that one stopover is allowed on each direction (outbound and inbound) for a total of 2 stopovers unless otherwise noted. This applies to BA and its partners. I will admit I haven't been following BA very closely lately but it would seem quite shocking that they would get rid of stopovers totally. I guess it's about time to give BA a call to catch up! By the way, the only BA partner that doesn't allow two stopovers is QF. Only one stopover prior to the destination is allowed and that was clearly specified in this new membership guide sent out earlier this year.

Here is the the rule I'm referring to. I copied this from the BA Executive Club North America web site just now:

41. A stopover is permitted in each direction at one connecting point on British Airways and British Airways joint awards round trip travel awards. If more than one stopover is requested, a higher mileage level will be charged.
a) Unlimited stopovers are permitted on "Create your own oneworld" travel awards.
b) No stopovers are permitted on other Executive Club airline partner travel awards.

So, I think that this is quite clear in that no stopovers are allowed on partner awards that involve no BA travel and are not the oneworld awards. But, I suppose it's possible that this has changed recently and they've not updated the web site, although I believe the web site has been like this for at least a year.
