oneworld - BA or QF from London to Australia in economy?

I'm planning a trip to Australia and am wondering who you think has the better economy service. I understand that both are relaunching their economy products. My instinct is to pick QF just to try them out because I haven't flown them before. What do you think?

Thanks for any help.

I believe that QF flights only accrue 70% of flight mileage in economy, so BA is the way to go.

However BA and QF code share on flights to Australia, so u can buy a BA ticket, fly QF equipment, and get full credit on AA. Actually u could fly BA equipment to BKK/SIN/HKG/KUL, then continue on a QF equipment to Australia, thus checking both carriers.

If u are flying AA, make sure your adress not in the UK. BA will only give AA miles on full fares to UK residents.

Rich makes a good point and I like the code share idea to get QF aircraft/service. Since your questions specifically asks about service in economy, (I've never taken that specific route with BA), I'd try to go QF because BA simly has little regard for the economy section of the plane, IMHO. They may well set the pace up front, along with SQ and AN, but seem to think that the main cabin is a cargo hold!

I understand that BA is introducing new economy seats with seat-back videos. There are posters in Sydney advertising this. So, if you think that you will be bored, try BA.

Depends on your budget or when it is for...

Currently, Qantas Holidays (Jetabout) is offering fares of around 599 Pounds for the special flights of QF 31/QF32 from London to Sydney (only) return. Fares are valid thru to 31 Mar 99 and once issued, are valid for one year. You may stopover only in Singapore once there or once in each direction.

Tickets are booked in Q class. You will earn full points if credited to Canadian Plus, BA Exec Club-US, or AAdvantage. Only QF frequentj flyer will earn you 70% of journey and Cathay's AsiaMiles - 50% only. Fares to other cities other than Sydney are higher.

BA may have new seats, but they are extremely cramped!Qantas seats are just a bit more generous in pitch.

Don't expect upgrades.

Thank you all for the advice. It seems that the best choice would be to buy a BA-ticket on a QF-operated flight. This would offer the most mileage potential. I am very tall so the legroom on QF is more important than the in-seat video on BA. Do the occasional BA promotions from London to Syndey qualify to earn miles under the new guidelines? I have a US address so would be able to earn AA miles.

Thanks again.

For AAdvantage members all discount economy QF fares (i.e. anything other than Y) will only earn 70% of the mileage.

From early next year Qantas too, will be installing Seatback TV's in their economy class cabin of 747 400 and then 767 300.
