SIN-SZX
SQ 808
Boeing 777-200
10:40 -- 14:15
Flight time: 3:15

I waited a long time for international air service to Shenzhen. Our cargo has no problem to get in and out of Shenzhen on an international airline, but as a person who does not want to travel in a container I have not yet been able to. Normally I am always travelling via Hongkong. The SQ flight times to Shenzhen are not yet adjusted properly, the flight comes in mid-day and leaves mid-day, so it is not really useful for business people who just want to stay in Shenzhen for one working day. But, anyway, better than nothing. Also, there is no F class on this flight. They offer the international old C class product on this route.

Even if you are on a ten-sector international F trip, SQ does not let you use the F part of their lounge. They insist your flight is C class so you can only get the C class breakfast in the lounge and not the F one. OK, accepted, as my waiting time was very short anyway.

The flight was leaving from F59, a very remote location. C class was 1/3 full, Y completely booked at 100%. The cabin crew was very nice and helpful. The usual SQ experience: if you desire something, you will get it just about before you ask for it. After the welcome champaign and take-off, sockets and hot towels were presented and the beverage service started immediately. Other than on LH were you have to wait until one hour in flight before you get a drink, this works much faster on SQ. The wine list is quite nice for business class: Pieper Heidsieck Rare Cuvee and four wines. Of course, I tasted all of them. From the white wine selection, I can recommend the German Hattenheimer Riesling by Balthasar Ress, which is on the sweet side, and from the reds, I recommend the 1999 Chateau Cantin Grand Cru (St. Emilion).

As I hate to eat fish, I always order a vegetarian meal. Most airlines load this meal additionally, so you can still have everything from the menu that you like. Besides, I like to have an extra choice because as a frequent flyer you frequently receive the same menu and may become bored. For this flight, it was a good decision to have the extra meal as the starter was one choice only, and this was a fish dish. Instead, I received a nice plate of Mozzarella Cheese with different vegetables. Three main courses were offered (seared beef fillet in madeira sauce with spinach; oriental style roadt chicken, sake teriyaki). I took the veggie one which was steamed vegetables with couscous, a very delicate choice. Most appreciated of course is the "Ben and Jerryīs New York Super Fudge Ice Cream" http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

On my boarding pass, SQ printed the special meal choice as "VLML" -- "vegetarian light meal". When the pursor asked me if I had ordered a special meal, I showed him my BP and told him I ordered the "VLML" which translates into: "very large meal". he was laughing about it but it might have been an old joke http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

The "selection from the cheese board" is disappointing: no cheese board, just a pre-packaged plate. three cheeses sitting on it, one packaged in aluminum foil, with some grapes. if i hate something more than eating fish, then it is supermarket cheese, and this sure is supermarket cheese. a good idea is to take the port wine with it to wash it down http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I like SQs IFE system a lot. On this flight we dont have the interactive version, but for the short duration the offers are more than enough. I just have the feeling that Star Alliance also harmonizes movie purchases, because the SQ IFE system includes about most of the LH movies.

A nice example of SQ service was when one stewardess asked me if I want some more red wine. I said yes, and she went to the galley. as my glass was empty, the other stewardess and the pursor both asked me if I want more wine .... so during three minutes, three people noticed my glass was empty. I just compare this with my LH F flight where sometimes the stewardess walked though the cabin making sure they do not see anything around them and nobody would stop them asking for a drink etc unless the call button was used. On the other side, maybe SQ already had a note on the manifest that it is better to get me drunken quickly so I will sleep and do not bother them any longer http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

shenzhen arrival was very nice: door opened, about 15 customer officers blocked the exit. cabin crew discussed with them five minutes and then we were allowed into the terminal. really, the terminal looked very modern, it was spotless clean and immigration was very fast.

right after customs i was expected by the crowne plaza driver and he brought me to the hotel in an Audi A6 fast and safely.

all in all, if SQ reworks the schedule for this flight, i would stop all my travel via hongkong and go to shenzhen directly on SQ.

Hi!

Nice little report. Iīm very interested in the Pearl River Delta-region of "New China". Thatīs because my biggest hobby is globalisation/urbanism and itīs very interesting how these cities (Shenzhen, Guangzhou/Canton) developed over the last few years. Anyway! You know whatīs funny: I just read an old Hong Kong-report by you yesterday and wondered if you already discovered the new SQ service into Shenzhen. You did!

Greetings from good old Austria,
Tom

i can only say it is amazing how it develops day to day. i am here once or twice a month and it is both funny and fascinating.

Sounds interesting. I have a few questions. I want to visit Shenzhen in the near future as a tourist. Do you think thatīs possible for me? I mean. Are there any problems navigating the city by public transport (english-signs) and can you survive without speaking Mandarin?

Greetings,
Tom

Tomashi,

I dont think that Shenzhen holds a lot for usual tourists other than congestion, pollution and construction sites, but that alone can be an experience. To me downdown Shenzhen looks lite a small, dirty version of HongKong without a waterfront, think of it as MongKok quadrupled. Pirate software, watches, clothing, whatever stores all over and the architecture very blund.

Its facinating though to watch this city develop and grow seemingly without any control. I first visited Shenzen in 1994 while I was working in HKG and had to visit the factories there. It was the industrial hinterland of HGK then with almost no high-rises and few decent hotels, but a plethora of 3 story sweatshops producing every kind of basic consumer goods (plastic toys, kitchen utensils, etc.). But even then I found restaurants there where I had some of the best meals of my life, but not downtown rather on the outskirts of the city. It would have been impossible to get around without an english speaking local then (I even had a hard time ordering a coke at the hotel, but I was the only gwailo at the premises, never in three months saw a western face there), but this has changed as a lot of international hotels have set up. Downtown is easy to navigate now, but for there more remote and interesting neighbourhoods I would recommend an english speaking driver. As far as I know public transport consits only of the Minibuses which go everywhere and I cant even figure out to use then in HKG, where you cant really go lost. Regular taxi drivers dont speak english most of the time you need your destination written in mandarin or hire a hotel car. But if you dont venture out the gravity center of Shenzhen too far and have time on your hands you will be able to navigate around.

HKG changed a lot during the last 8 years but comming back to Shenzhen made me speechless. There you feel what globalization is all about and why european societies will have a far bigger problem than the mainstream thinks in the not too far future ....

Wow!

Thank you very much for the detailed reply paulusst! Your first-hand information is very useful for me. I especially like your last paragraph (globalization). Thatīs exactly why Iīm interested in Shenzhen and the surrounding areas. I think itīs a sort of "Bilderbuchbeispiel" for globalization and urbanism. And whatīs even more fascinating: Even though the city is really big nowadays, only a few people in Europe or the US know that it exists and where it is.

OK. Thanx again. Iīll probably go there on a 1 or 2-day sidetrip from SIN in the near future.

Greetings, Tom

Uli,
thanks for the hotel-tip. I already checked the "Crowne Plaza" website. Sounds nice.

Greetings from Austria to China (or wherever you are at the moment)!

Uli - was the 777 fitted out with Spacebeds (and thus one of the 2 class aircraft) or was it a 3 class plane with the F seats closed?

I have to say that I find Shenzhen a fascinating place for a day - I do have to keep pinching myself to remember this is China! I passed through in 1997 and then went back in 2002. I've never seen anywhere change as much, apart from possibly Pudong in Shanghai.

dont want to disappoint you but it was a two class 777. business (old) and economy. had the same kind of plane today SIN-TPE -- business (old) -- and normal eco. quite a bad choice when you hold an F ticket.

Uli, any details from your return Shenzhen flight and SIN-TPE ?

Uli
Mar 8, 04, 11:05 am
it was HKG-SIN-TPE

HKG-SIN was a flight that taught me why i love SQ F. i did not want to post about it and there so many i-love-sq-posts here.
SIN-TPE was C/Y only, I was in the full C compartment, and it was medium nice.

My dear SNOB http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif, I am already looking forward to another one of your brilliant reports, but I just want to say here:

This is wrong on SQ's part and maybe write to their corporate/customer service and appeal. It is the fastest way to turn away good customers. It is too bad that Cathay doesn't run a small jet out to Shenzhen.

By the way, Herzlich Willkommen nach Oneworld! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif ( Das besser Allianz!)

I know I shall enjoy this. Tchuss

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif This made me laugh. Sehr lustig, danke.

Loved the report. We only passed through Shenzhen going to Guangzhou.

It looked nice, but I would rather be in Hong Kong. What they should do is offer a helicopter/CanadairJet service between CLK and Shenzhen Airport.

I hate the visa part. $50 US for a one time entry, a friend of mine just picked up a Chinese visa. They should atleast allow for a multiple entry visa.

Also all that red in the passport http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif just seems to stand out to immigration officers around the world.

Are there any hotels by the airport? The plane spotting would have to be incredible. I have the Guangzhou Airport DVD and it is great.

Always a good job, never a dissapointment.

Along with (Senor Gaucho http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif ) you are def. a snob!!! tchuss

i stand corrected. on my way SIN to TPE (C/Y only flight) I asked in the krislounge ticket counter and they allowed me in the F part of the lounge without discussion.

I like your joke about VLML = very large meal, but it really stands for ovo lacto vegetarian meal, as opposed to VGML (vegan), or AVML (Asian Vegetarian). I also remember seeing IVML (I think) for the Indian vegetarian meals that I usually prefer. Most airlines use the same acronyms, although not all offer AVML or IVML meals.

All these codes refer to the meal content but do not reflect the meal size, i.e. breakfast, brunch, main meal, light meal.

Thanks for the report. But just to show how hard it is to please everybody...

If I was watching a movie it would really annoy me to have to take my headphones off to answer the same question three times.

But then I do most of my flying on CX in F, so I guess I'm spoilt http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif
