Background:

HMY Airways (stands for Harmony) is a relatively new Canadian airline operating scheduled service between Vancouver and Toronto and Vancouver-LAX and charter service betwen Vancouver-LAS and various cities in Mexico. The airline operates 2 Boeing 757-200 aircraft, with an additional unpainted operating spare B757.

The airline offers two classes of service, they are: Premium Economy (which they sell as C class) and regularly economy. For my recent reading weekend trip to YVR, I had the pleasure to fly in their Premium Economy cabin.

Trip Report:

HMY Airways Flight: HQ 855
Date: February 19th, 2004
Aircraft: B757 (C-GMYC)
Scheduled Departure Time: 730am
Actual Departure Time at gate: 720am
In-air Flying time: 4h44min
Scheduled Arrival Time: 945am
Actual Arrival Time at gate: 930am

Since this flight departs early in the morning, I booked a Priceline hotel room by the airport to spend the previous night so that I don't have to leave the university super early in the morning. I took the hotel airport shuttle and got to Terminal 3 of YYZ airport at 6am.

HMY offers a priority check-in for their Premium Economy customers. However, there were absolutely no one checking in at all counters at the time, so I got my boarding pass within a minute. I got through security and sat by gate B20.

Before boarding commenced at 7am, they announced today's flight's winner for their "Weight in for Gold" contest. Basically, HMY is giving away an ounce of gold to one passenger on each flight from now until end of March and everyone who travels with them during this period gets entered for a final draw to win an ounce of gold for every pound you weigh. I think that this contest is quite cool.

After they announced the flight's winner, they started boarding for their Premium Economy customers as well as anyone else who needs additional assistance. I quickly boarded and settled in my seat. I was then welcomed by the in-charge, Stephanie and was offered a choice of cranberry cocktail, OJ, or apple juice as a welcome drink. The flight attendants also offered me the Globe and Mail and a wet napkin along with the paper. An interesting note is that they also offer the Ming Pao newspaper for their Chinese customers, which I think it's a nice touch.

Everyone was boarded by 720am for an early departure. The loads today was extremely light, only 11 sitting in the Premium Economy and another 50 in the Economy section. On the 757, HMY's Premium Economy offers 3x3 seatings, with a 38 seat pinch and they block all middle seats. Given the light load, everyone in Premium Economy has their own row.

Once we took off, I was offered an amenity kit, consists of an inflatable neck cushion, an eye-shade, a clip-on head set, and a deck of HMY's playing cards. The flight today has 6 flight attendants, two of which are serving the 11 customers up front. I was impressed by the less than 1:6 ratio.

After a few minutes, Stephanie, the in-charge, came to take the breakfast order. The hot choice was a ham omelette and the cold choice was yogurt with oak mill cereals. I took the hot choice.

The breakfast was served in a huge tray along with a choice of either a croissant or dinner roll. I picked the croissant, as did the other 11 passengers. The croissant was warm and delicious. The breakfast tray also came with some nicely cut fresh melons. I ordered tea to come with my breakfast. Stephanie quickly came back with a nice wooden box with a choice of 6 different types of tea, while the other FA immediately returned with a very shiny HMY silver tea pot. HMY serves Mighty Leaf brand tea and I was quite impressed with its quality. http://www.mightyleaf.com/

After the breakfast service, they started the movie service and they showed 2 movies on this 4h45min flight. I, however, chose to get some sleep instead.

Two hour later, I was woken up by the smell of danish. Stephanie came by and offered me a choice of either a chocolate or apple danish. I picked the apple one and it was a very nice snack.

After another serving of coffee, the captain announced that we've begun our decent into Vancouver International Airport. Stephanie came out with hot towels and later passed out a HMY chocolate "gold coin" along with a Chinese red pocket to all passengers. Inside the red pocket, I received a note thanking me for flying with HMY today and a $20 certficate redeemable for the next HMY flight. HMY offers these red pockets as its owner, Dr. David Ho, is Canadian-Chinese and would like to celebrate the Year of the Monkey with its passengers.

Fifteen minutes later, we landed safely in beautiful Vancouver.

Overall, this is another excellent and enjoyable HMY flight. I've flown HMY six times in the last half a year and was never disappointed. HMY's owner, Dr. Ho, has repeatedly told the press that he's trying to make HMY to be a class of its own in Canadian aviation and I truly felt that he has accomplished that!

I flew HMY last week YYZ to YVR in Premium Economy, and had essentially the exact same trip as described above, including the light load in the back and everyone up front having their own row.

One question: Did the 11 people up front all pay for Premium Economy, or were some of them given at-the-gate upgrades? This was the case on my flight - I was the only person who actually paid for PE.

Interesting promotion. Around how much is an ounce of gold worth now?

I read on HMY's site that you can actually ask for cash instead of the one ounce of gold. In that case, they'll give you around C$550.
