I'm considering stopping in NRT on the way back from a 10 day trip to BKK next summer and want to hear peoples thoughts on the feasibility of doing a short 24 or 48 hour stop like this.

Unfortunately I dont have much more time than this, but I figured since I'm passing through, why not stop and see the city.

Any thoughts from those of you have done this? Thanks in advance!

I would not go to Tokyo in summer. Summer is hot and muggy. The monsoon season can mean four or five days of torrential rain that can play havoc with a tight travel itinerary.

Agreed. For reference, the rainy season in Tokyo is usually late May-June, and the summer with extreme humidity and temperatures as high as 40C is July-August. Of course, most everyplace indoors is air-conditioned, but it's not a good time of year to go temple-tramping...

Agreed on the timeframe of the rainy season and the summer weather. It can also be what might seem quite warm even into early October. As humid as Singapore usually is, I find a Tokyo summer even worse.

Last May (on a trip to BKK also), I stopped in NRT on the 27-29th.

Actually the weather was a welcome change from BKK, I had to wear jeans vs, shorts, but it didn't rain. Others are a better source on the weather however, as I can only say what it was like the 48 hours I was there.

I stopped there just so I could see it, since I got a free stop-over. That was really the main reason I did it so I could al least beat around for a day. I arrived at around 2pm so by the time you get into town that day is gone, the next day was a full day (subway pass and all around town), then the last day the flight left around 4pm so there isn't that much you can do that day either.

So I did it as an opportunity to see it because I probably won't make a specific trip there (except as I go through on UA). If I had intentions of going back for a trip I wouldn't have done it, but in my case I'm glad I did.

Heck, if it's likely to be your only chance, you can deal with the humidity. But make it 48 hours if you want a day in Tokyo; for 24 hours it's probably not worth it to go much past Narita town.

Enjoy your trip to Tokyo!
