How nice the service on short-haul flights can be
------------------
FRA AMS
Unless most LH flights that I took over the last weeks were pretty full, this one was a nice exception. 40 seats available in C and 30 in Y. C was configured 2-3, Y was 3-3. I was able to get a complete exit row in C. As the load was pretty empty, the F/As came around with pre-depature drinks in C, water and OJ. Magazines, Newspapers and refreshment towels were handed out.
After take-off a cold dinner was handed out, with real silverware and on porcellan dishes. Quite tasty food. As the C cabin was empty, the service was more than perfect, with plenty of drink refills. A second round of warm bread rolls was served, and you could also get the cheese and ham sandwiches from economy class if you wanted.
Landing was hard but uneventful. Unfortunately the walk from the gate to the exit was really long in AMS.
AMS Airport Hilton
I arrived around 2230. From the outside the hotel looked really shabby so I was very close to ask the driver to bring me to the Sheraton that looked much nicer. Anyway, the cancellation time for the rooms was over and I had it guaranteed with my Amex card, so I went in. They told me I was planned for an upgrade to the executive floor, but anyway the executive club was closed already, and the rooms were all booked. So I ended up with a little room with a really small bathroom in the 6th floor. At least, it had been newly renovated. I was happy to see that they offered a broadband internet plugin on the desk. It had to be configured via the TV, and also cost was 10 Euro per hours, which I found offensive. On the TV, you could not watch any TV programme if you did not switch through pages of advertisment for all their other video services before. Annoying.
I had to rush to get some food as the room service commenced at 2300 hrs (after that only some snacks were available -- unacceptable for an airport hotel). I asked the roomservice to deliver the winelist to the room and placed my order directly with the nice lady who brought it. I choose a salad, a pizza, and a bottle of bordeaux (a beautiful match), a total of 100 Euro for the room service dinner.
At this price, it would have been nice to take the Pizza out of the paper box and put it on a plate, and also to deliver a decent wine glass to the room … but obviously they did not care about those details at all.
After this, I was surprised that the wakeup call was a personal one, no computer voice this time. The shuttle bus to the airport was OK and quick.
AMS-MUC
I was not allowed to bring my relatively small bag in the plane, so I had to accept the yellow “delivered at aircraft” sticker – no sense, as the plane was not full and it was clear that the seat next to mine was empty.
The CRJ 100 Canadair Jet was about 60% full – six rows of business class (2-2, same like economy class) and I could get a row for myself again. Very good. Unfortunately the departure was delayed by AMS traffic.
Service was outstanding again, a very good breakfast (cheese, ham, jam, joghurt, many bread and drink services) was served. It looked like everyone in C was really happy and appreciating the nice service.
At our late arrival, I was the first to leave the plane (appron position) and was greeted by a boy with a sign “direct transfer service for Mr Uli” who drove me directly to the plane to FMO.
MUC-FMO
For those who don’t know what FMO means (no need to be embarrassed), FMO is the Münster-Osnabrück-Airport. It is quite frequently connected with Munich. The flight was operated by Eurowings in a turboprop ATR 42. When I arrived in the private shuttle bus I was the first passenger. On the ATR 42, Eurowings has one F/A, and she was quite happy someone arrived so she would no longer have to wait alone. C class (also same 2-2 seating as in eco) was divided with a mini-curtain and C was behind Y, the last four rows.
This is because the ATR 42 has its passenger door at the end, and also it is much quieter in the back. So I took my seat in the last row (12C). I was allowed to start my laptop computer, and was served a pre-depature water, which is really a rare occasion on intra-German flights. After 15 minutes, the other passenger arrived and boarded. The baggage was also loaded though the cabin in the aft baggage compartment behind the galley.
We had to wait at the ramp about 20 minutes for our slot time to arrive, and the F/A was serving chocholate bars and refreshment towels in both cabins. A nice touch.
After the take-off, the F/A served the 38 passengers more than excellent: Full breakfast for the six pax in C, and I don’t know what kind of small snack in economy. The flight goes about 1:30, economy received two beverage servings until now (now this report becomes a life report) and C had their third round already. After the breakfast, some cake was offered to the C pax as well. Cabin is quiet now and everyone is enjoying the nice views on sunny Germany, and the F/A has started to stow the service cart away. But I am 100% sure everyone could still get more drinks or food if one would ask.
I have to close the report now as it seems the captain has already started the descend into FMO, and I have to read something before my meeting in FMO …
I hope the report shows how pleasant flying can be in short-haul C ...
