Trip Reports - SIN-DPS on Singapore Air
Girlfriend and I spent the weekend in Bali over the July 4th weekend. Flew SIA from Singapore to Denpensar and back. Sat in 58D and E. Flight was full. Excellent service as usual. Got a good deal, 315SGD each for the flights, not accumulating miles.
Stayed at www.balipavilions.com (http://www.balipavilions.com) in Sanur.
I love Bali.

But the hotel looks great! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
How do you like Sanur as opposed to the other beach areas? It's been a couple of years since I was last in Bali and, call me crazy, but I did kind of like the hectic atmosphere of Kuta. Sanur, and the Hyatt, seemed a little too tranquil for me.

have to disagree with you there tfjim. Cant stand Kuta, to many noisy backpackers + very dirty. Sanur although more tranquil adn quiet i think has a better feel to it than Kuta. Much more relaxing. But i guess Bali caters to a lot of different travelers!
The hotel was wonderful. A friend owns a portion of it so we got it for free. We had a one bedroom pool villa and hardly left it.
Sanur is not what it used to be, although that is not saying much. My GOD, we went by the Bali Beach Hotel. What a dump. They have done nothing to it for at least 12 years, when I first came to Bali.
The restaurants and shops in Sanur are very boring, nothing new and not worth the visit. If you want something different, try Candidasa or take a boat trip to Nusa Lembongan - http://www.nusa-lembongan.com/
Personally I don't like Kuta. These days I've been hanging my hat over in Semanyak. Another friend owns KuDeTa - a wonderful restaurant and Bar on the beach. www.kudeta.net/ (http://www.kudeta.net/)
But of course I"m a surfer so I tend to go where the surf is. That brings me to a somewhat secret beach called Dreamland up on the Bukit. It is the best beach in Bali.

Going there first week of august. staying at the sheraton nusa indah. is kuta really that bad? thinking of spending a couple of nights there, just to see how it is.
SQ flights for the week prior to national day (aug 9th) is extremely full. i wish they fly with greater frequency than the current 3 flights per day.
SIN1K, any suggestions on where to go in Bali? where are good shopping places?
ws8n,
for shopping I prefer Ubud, unless you like the thrill of being hassled, looking at endless stores of crap, tijuana style.
Of course I know people who love to go to the Hard Rock to pick up on chicks...but I avoid it.
This is a broad topic, but I'll give it a try. Assuming that you have never been, want to see the real bali and not do the major tourist stuff, try this.
Go straight to Ubud. Stay at either the Chedi or Ulun Ubud. Shop at Monkey Forest Road. Rent a car to go to Mt. Batur. Eat at Ary's and Wayan's cafe (in Ubud). Go to the dancing.
For the beach, go to Candidasa or stay down in Semanyak. One place that is good is called the Legian (same owner as the Chedi). Hang out at ku de ta. Great food/drink/women but just ok beach.
If you want to IM me for more on Bali, get me at fei_da@hotmail.com
Cheers.

Suggestions for heading straight to Ubud are right on. Other nice hotels include Komaneka (on Monkey Forest Rd., right in the center of town), Maya Ubud (resort a couple of kms outside of town, Komaneka Suite (on a river gorge outside of town).
Kuta is horrid, full of drunken tourists who come to Bali and leave never experiencing any of the unique culture and topography. I especially would not go near Kuta nowadays with the terrorist problems. Unfortunately, it would not surprise me if Kuta were targeted again.
SIN1K, my email to your hotmail account got bounced.
