Air Pacific are the National airline of Fiji, Qantas are the major shareholder but they have a style all their own. This trip was taken over Christmas 2002.

Sydney to Nadi Business Class:
Check in at the Qantas J counters at Sydney airport. The security guy says “where you goin?” I say “ Nadi”. Where’s that - he says. Go check a map mate. ......!
No waiting at check-in then it’s off to get a few purchases before a visit to the business/QC lounge. For those that haven’t been, the lounge was opened in the first half of 2002 and is a real prize for Qantas. Make your way to the extreme right of the lounge and sit back with a bloody mary on a recliner lounge and watch the action on the ramp…HEAVEN!

Boarding was uncomplicated for this a 767-300, seat pitch is a very generous 50” (Air Pacific do not offer F class). Pre take-off drinks were offered then we were in the air.

Another very well made bloody mary and then luncheon was served. Choice of meals and wines were not too bad but not to the standard of the larger airlines. The real treat is the genuine service given by the FA’s. They really are friendly and make up for most short-comings that you could identify. The cabin was rather plain but very well maintained. Seating was comfortable but a little out of date – perfectly comfortable for a journey of just over 3 hours. As an aside, AP are acquiring 2 new 747-400’s from SQ in a few months to service the LAX/NAN/SYD routes so I think that things will change dramatically there. IFE was either the main screen or they offer a selection of DVD’s on a Sony player.

Arrival into Nadi was on time. The airport is undergoing extensive renovations and not before time. Fiji was a delight and the people very friendly.

On the return, check in was manual as the computer system was down. The lounge at Nadi is adequate and thankfully air-conditioned.

The all male crew on the return to Sydney were even better than the girls were on the way up and the special gifts of locally made soaps were a nice touch.

In all a friendly and comfortable airline that is investing in its future and that of its Nation.

I concur, Air Pacific have been exceptional each time I have flown Sydney-Nasouri (Suva) and Nadi-Sydney. The cabin service in both J and Y rocks, and if they give you an op upgrade to J, you'll likely get the status credits and miles as if you had paid the J fare.

The lounge at Nadi is good, but can get crowded at times. The internet connections there are about the fastest in Fiji, although you can dial to Australia via the modem lines at the workstations. Here's a hint, nick a handset from elsewhere in the lounge and chat to your mates in Melbourne for half an hour prior to departure. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

The soap/ toiletry packs were appreciated by my wife. Interesting personal video set-up in J, with mini video players & LCD screen units sitting on your meal tray. But heh, it works.

Haven't checked out the QF J lounge at SYD international - it's too far to walk past the F lounge, and the lure of Boags + crumbed chicken and strawberries on tap is just too strong......

GoldFlyer!

Thanks for the report!
Why were you not happy with the food and the wines, what was wrong with it?

Thank you for the trip report. I enjoyed reading it especially since I flew Air Pacific to Nadi from Sydney a few years ago.

No real problem with the food other than the choice that I sellected on the menu was replaced by Roast Turkey, - being Christmas, I was going to Fiji to escape all that.

The wines were a little below par, I think a McGuigans red or choice of 2 whites - not really flash wines. You do get better on some of the larger carriers but this is not meant as a put down to AP.

Didn't do a lot of touring around but I would recommend hiring a car as the island is large. Stayed on the coral coast where there are many large hotel resorts. There's a beautiful beach called Natadola that can be reached via a turn off 10km past the Fijian and just before the temple. The road is currently being surfaced so it is very bad in places (don't tell the rental company) once on the beach you have clear water, no coral and a vast sweep of sand. This is very much a local beach and not many tourists are in sight, it is recommended that you pack away your valuables in the car just in case. I would also advise that you take, and use sunscreen even on cloudy days as the sun is ferocious.

I agree 100%! The recliner loungers are great. I can quite easily pass a couple of hours watching the activity on the apron and runway.

Well done for finding Natadola http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Yes, I must say it was a bit worrying at times there are a few wooden bridges in very bad repair and with rail tracks going accross (theses are pretty small guage used for sugar cane) and large sections of the planking missing. The car was very small, the gaps between rail and bridge huge. You need to drive slow if you have a small car, not easy if you have a huge bus up your bum like I did!

I forgot to mention that if you are staying at the Fijian (a Shangri La Resort) there is a small train that will take you to the beach which looked interesting. It travels through the cane fields so there's bound to be a few snakes, mongoose and toads along the way. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

This brings back happy memories of Natadola beach and negotiating those dodgy bridges in a Honda Civic... all good fun!

My first experience of Fiji was being driven straight to Natadola after arriving from Nadi on an evening flight, and swimming in the darkness with phospherescence shimmering around me... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Fantastic!! I didn't realise we'd all been there http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif! I manage to stop by Natadola at least once every time I'm in Fiji, and it definately is a fantastic beach (definately the best one on Viti Levu). My girlfriend actually lives just a few minutes away from Natadola so I'm the lucky one http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif. For anyone wishing to get a real taste of Fiji life, a can recommend a stay in Sanasana village, which is a 10 minute walk from the beach. It's very, very basic, but the people are extremely friendly even by Fijian standards. There isn't really any kind of proper tourist accommodation, you'll just be staying in someone's house. When I was last in the village (August 2000) I paid F$25 a night with all meals included. If you're interested just turn up at Natadola beach (with 500g of Kava as a sevusevu for your host) and ask one of the ladies who sell shells under the trees about staying in Sanasana. Highy recommended, won't find it in any guide books http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif. If anyone wants any more info, please feel free to email me.

Cheers, Zac

P.S. mad_atta that sounds like quite an introduction to Fiji http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
